5 tips for healthy habits

Be Healthy, Family Friendly Eats

The lovely Kath and Liz from Simple Nourishment have some great tips to encourage healthy habits for children.

  1. Start slowly by changing the food in your pantry from processed to include more whole foods. Very few families transition well going  cold turkey!
  2. Hide as many vegetables as possible in your snacks if you have fussy eaters(or even if you don’t) Although many experts don’t subscribe to this theory, it works a treat for us. If one of your favourite recipes has apple or even banana already in it try substituting a 1/2 or 1/4 with grated carrot or pumpkin.
  3. If you are changing to more wholesome snacks, add in a little extra sweetener (honey, dates, bananas) and then (remember) to reduce it over time.
  4. Ensure your children are active! This helps build their appetite and they are generally more likely to eat what is put in front of them. We find this also helps our stress levels!
  5. Be aware of what your children are eating throughout the whole day. It can be easy to let them graze all day but from experience it can lead to stressful dinners if the children aren’t hungry then it may lead to  little ones waking through the night due to hunger.

  • Kids are unpredictable - like many of the Fringe shows we've seen really. As much as I have fought it, I am ready to admit that I am at a stage in my life, with kids, where PLANNING is king. Attending events is no exception, so here is my guide to surviving a day at Adelaide Fringe with kids. Sort your transport or parking in advance. Weekends get particularly busy and opening night 15th Feb will also see some road closures around War Memorial Drive. Pre booking city car parks is about the smartest invention since the Rubik's Cube. Of course you can bus, train, tram, uber and taxi. Or ride a bike - but preferably a hipster bike - because FRINGE. For Wilson East End book here: https://bookabay.wilsonparking.com.au/ There is over 1000 shows in the 2019 Adelaide Fringe Program Know where your show is. I recall my first Fringe. It wasn't that long ago and I made an assumption sillier than Mr Snotbottom him self, that it all happened in The Garden of Unearthly Delights. Nope. Fringe. Is. Huge. While the biggest hubs are in the East End of the CBD, venues are all over the place including some out in…

  • As the summer holidays slowly draw to an end you may have started to prepare for the school term ahead. If you are anything like myself, one area that you might be thinking about is food. What are you going to feed the kids and how can you pack them a healthy lunch box. As a society we are understanding now more than ever the importance of gut health and its influence on overall health. Whilst this area of science is still an emerging field we do know that certain foods are better than others for building a healthy gut. Looking for ways to support your little one’s gut and overall health? Check out my top tips for building a gut friendly lunch box below. Diversity is key - by incorporating a range of plants into their lunch boxes you are helping to fuel a diverse range of gut bugs as bacteria love to eat from a range of different plant fibres. Don’t stress if you can’t get them to eat a huge range of vegetables just yet!  Just start with the fruits and vegetables that they do like and try to switch them around as much as possible and…

  • When it comes to packing lunchboxes for kids, there's a lot of pressure to ensure the food is 'nude', raw, organic and homemade. If you're like a lot of parents, this can be tricky. Things like work, other children, illness or even access to these kinds of foods can all play a role in what types of food your children receive in their lunchboxes each day. Rather than stressing about all the different rules, maybe it's best to keep it simple? Here are some tips from Fleur, who is a primary school teacher.....she knows! Keep it colourful- add carrots, capsicum, cucumber and cheese. As long as there's lots of naturally colourful foods then you're on the right track!Get the kids involved in making their own snacks on the weekend. These could be muesli bars, muffins, fruit & coconut balls, yoghurt dipped fruit or try Julie's delicious homemade roll ups! Getting the kids involved will not only keep them interested in what they eat, but it also helps them learn about how foods are made, what types of foods are healthy and provides them with a sense of ownership over what they're putting in their lunchbox. Another great part of getting…
