An old fashioned Adelaide Hills pub with yummy meals, amazing desserts, kids eat free on Monday’s and Tuesday’s AND an enclosed outdoor playground!
Being an ex Hills girl I have been to The Aldgate many time as a kid and in my 20s (anyone out there remember how good Christmas Eve used to be at The Aldgate!?!), but haven’t been back for years and years. I have heard that they still have a great little beer garden, now with a playground, so I wanted to check it out and tonight we did.
I had read some very mixed review on Trip Advisor and Facebook so didn’t really know what to expect. But our booking of 4 adults and 1 5 year old all left very happy after a delicious dinner and particularly delicious dessert.
We sat outside in the garden, right next to the playground and although a little bit on the cool side, we were all wearing jumpers and all comfortable to sit out there for a couple of hours. It would be a really nice spot on a warm summers night too, or a Sunday lunch in the sun.
There were about 6 other kids there tonight for dinner so Winnie had a great time playing chasey on the small playground. It’s just enough to keep kids busy until their dinner arrives, which is perfect!
Lots of pub style dishes to choose from. We tried the beef Guiness pie which was really nice, a steak and a “hot rock” with a selection of meat that comes out on a steaming (VERY HOT) rock where you can cook it right to your liking at your table. Dad tried an Aussie Grill with Kangaroo, Salmon, Crocodile and Rump – so if your little ones have adventurous taste this might be cool for them to try. Careful though, they mean it when they say HOT rock! It comes out at about 450 degrees so be careful of little fingers.
The kids menu isn’t anything spectacular, but has all your essentials. A pasta, house made chicken nuggets, fish and chips, schnitzel and a steak and chips. Winnie had the pasta with some broccoli off my plate and we were both happy with that.
The highlight was our dessert though. We ordered a “cold rock” dessert which came out like this! Not bad for fifteen bucks and DEFINITELY enough for a table of 5 to share.
We were all really happy with The Aldgate Pump tonight, so I would say give this place a try and see for yourself. And don’t forget KIDS EAT FREE on Monday’s and Tuesday’s so give yourself the night off the kitchen tools and check it out
