When the kingdom needs a new King, Switch must choose. Will she play hero or fool?
Switch Witchetty’s Almanac of Everything is a high-energy folktale adventure for ‘switched-on’ kids and their families from Sydney-based Pinwheel Productions, returning to the Adelaide Festival Fringe 2021 after critically acclaimed seasons at Adelaide Fringe 2020 and Edinburgh Fringe 2019.
A high-energy adventure filled with music, mayhem and ordinary bedsheets, Switch Witchetty is a court fool who can “switch” into others, allowing a unique perspective into their story. When the Kingdom is left to choose between two terrible kings, Switch is forced to use her switching talent and embark on a quest to write down the stories of the people in The Almanac of Everything. Switch must make her decision before the prince and princess tear the kingdom apart.
A fresh take on a fairy tales and adventure stories, Switch combines makeshift design and original music to question the role empathy plays in decision making; addressing resource management, gender roles, class divide, privilege, corporate greed, and integrity.
Switch has gained particular attention at the Edinburgh and Adelaide fringe festivals, leaving young audience members with unmissable wearable paper crowns, stickers and maps to follow along as Switch travels through the fictional kingdom of Blackheart.
Directed by Kaleigh Wilkie-Smith, the cast of three (including writer Alex Giles) ‘switch’ between 16 characters across a kingdom made from things recycled and repurposed. See Pinwheel Productions create rivers from bedsheets, mountains from milk crates, and books that light up like magic – inspired by the imagination of children creating these things at home, all from objects that are found in an average backyard or thrift store.
Pinwheel Productions, created by writer Alex Giles and director Kaleigh Wilkie-Smith, is an emerging independent theatre company building a reputation for creating parabolic adventure stories. Previous presentations include The Tale of Ichabod Scrubb, In Stitches, Big Fish and Stalker: The Musical (New York International Fringe Festival 2015, and Chicago Musical Theatre Festival 2016).
Switch Witchetty’s Almanac of Everything had its successful premiere season at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe where a nine-year old audience member said, “I write book reviews, and I give this show ten out of ten!”
Suitable for 4 – 12 year olds and their family and friends.
