Fruit just tastes better when you’ve picked it yourself, doesn’t it? Thankfully there are heaps of places across Adelaide where you can take the whole family and pick to your hearts content. Whether it’s strawberries, blueberries, citrus, apples, figs, we have found the best spots to trick your kids into a bit of exercise, fresh air and healthy eating all rolled into a fun, family day out! Bear in mind that all of the below picking spots have different fruit ripening times and different PYO opening times depending on the season and the rest of their business, so make sure you check their website or socials before you head off. 🍎 @Lenswood PYO Apples

There is nothing quite like the crunch of an apple that has been picked straight from the tree. And from late February 2024, you will be able to do just that in the Adelaide Hills when you visit @Lenswood Pick Your Own! Make a day of it with a picnic, stock up on delicious apples with the best names (Rosy Glow, anyone?). They have gift vouchers available too!

🍒 PYO Cherries @ Verdun

Welcome to the Cherries @ Verdun family farm, where you can come and experience the joys of delicious, juicy cherries straight off the tree. Located in the picturesque Onkaparinga Valley, just a 20-minute drive from Adelaide, their farm is the perfect place to enjoy a fun summer adventure with your family, young and old!

From late December through to January, you can visit and pick your own cherries. It’s a wonderful opportunity for kids and adults alike to connect with nature and create unforgettable memories. After the cherry picking, you can relax and enjoy a peaceful picnic lunch while admiring the breathtaking views of the valley. The fresh air and beautiful scenery are truly amazing.

🍓 Harvest the Fleurieu PYO Strawberries

Well known throughout South Australia is gourmet provedore, Harvest The Fleurieu. It is very much like visiting a farmer’s market showcasing the most wonderful array of fruit and vegetables which have been grown on their farm – in particular, strawberries. As well as many goodies available from suppliers all over South Australia, including gourmet cheeses, artisan breads, olives, pickles, jams and chutneys. If the display makes it difficult to choose, then a delicious treat or house made ice cream at the café will give you time to make up your mind.

It is now pick your own season at Harvest the Fleurieu where you can enjoy a few hours leisurely wandering through the strawberry fields picking your own deliciously sweet strawberries. Go wild as you fill your punnets to the brim and of course taste a few along the way; an experience you can guarantee the whole family will enjoy in the fresh Mount Compass air.

🍒 PYO Cherries at Lennane Orchards

A great range of different cherry varieties that ripen at different times throughout the season so you can try out different types and means the season is extended – YAY!

Our kids really enjoyed trying out the different varieties and I was surprised at how different they can all taste (my fave was the smaller, very dark variety last year!). The ‘Pick Your Own’ Orchard is only 20 minutes from the CBD and 5 minutes from Athelstone. The Kids in Adelaide team have been the past few years and the whole family LOVE it!

Lennane Orchards are open for pick your own cherries nearly every day during November and December, 9-5pm. Cherries can also be purchased directly prepacked from the shed door. They also grow Lemons, Plums and Raspberries, which you are also able to buy direct when in season.

🟤 Pick Your Own Figs at Glen Ewin Estate

Glen Ewin Estate isn’t just great for picking figs, there is also stunning grounds to explore along with a bar & platters. Fig picking season doesn’t last long though so keep an eye on their social media so you don’t miss out!

There’s not many places you can pick your own blueberries, but The Blueberry Patch at Mount Compass is one of them! Stock up & grab a yummy blueberry ice cream while you’re there. These guys don’t have a huge online presence but check their website or Twitter feed for PYO details.

Raspberries are such a special treat aren’t they? If you want the freshest raspberries, head to Kerrie’s Cherries at Yundi. They are hopeful that by early December there will be ripe, juicy berries just waiting to be picked & eaten over summer!

🍐 PYO Pears at Paracombe Premium Perry

Picking is only available at certain times at Paracombe Premium Perry, but it’s worth taking the short drive to pick some pears then stay for a delicious wood oven pizza lunch at their Shed Door. Adults can partake in their delicious cider & perry too!

  • Follow these easy steps to make your own homemade rollups from 100% fruit! The recipe is super simple and a great way to use up extra fruit you have leftover, or if you've been fruit picking and need ideas for your haul. What you need. 3 cups of fruit. I used frozen mango I had in the freezer but you could experiment with mixed berries, apricots, necatrines, pears, apples or anything really. Let us know which combos work best. Add a squeeze of lemon juice, it helps the fruit keep its bright colour If you want, add a bit of honey, if not leave it out. We added just one tablespoon as a test and it's YUMMY but you could definitely leave it out if you wanted. We've heard a touch of coconut oil is also delicious. Blend baby blend until it's as smooth as possible. I used my Magimix, but you could use Thermomix, a blender or your Nutribullet. Try and get all those lumps out for a nice smooth roll up.
