Pick Your Own Figs and cellar door at Glen Ewin Estate

Discover, Family Friendly Eats, Hills, Outdoor Adventures, Regional Features

Not like you need any more of an excuse to head up into our beautiful Adelaide Hills, but we think we have found something you need to put in your calendar for each and every year. Fig picking at the sensational Glen Ewin Estate at Houghton.

The seasonal delight is only open for between 4 to 6 weeks each year (dependent on weather), commencing around the start of February (again dependent on the blasted weather). You will need to be quick as the clock is ticking.

Picking fruit with the kids is always such a fun little outing but Glen Ewin offers so much more than just rocking up, chuck some fruit in a box and leave. The estate itself, is massive. Ginormous is Mr 5’s fave word at the moment and it seems appropriate here. 12,000 trees across 74 acres in fact. You drive down a long winding dirt road, past the amazing cellar door (will get to that in a tic), 2 incredible function venues and eventually you finish up in fig picking country. The stunning grassed area lined with what I have since been told are London Plane trees, make for the perfect way to finish off your fig pick. They have some chairs and tables, plus picnic rugs to use if needed, but they also have…wait for it….a bar. Right in the garden. An actual bar amongst the trees. We picked up some of their famous fig gin and with light food (uh hello cheese platter) also available, please don’t miss this or you will need to wait another year. Its kind of like adult Christmas.

Costing only $5 bucks each and with kids under 12 free, it is also a great value outing for the family. If you want to take home a heap of the figs you pick, it will set you back $10 a kilo. Not bad! You can also bring your fur baby too (on a lead of course). Bring the footy, the kite, the dog, the frisbee…whatever! This is a sensational spot.

If you have any room left after your figsperience (an actual word I have been informed) and are still hungry, pop up to the cellar door which apart from stocking some fantastic gins and wines for you to try, they also do meals with a fully serviced restaurant. Brunch on the balcony overlooking the incredible scenery with a box of figs stashed away for later…..if you can think of a better way to spend the weekend let us know. We highly recommend the kids brunch menu. Great value and the pancakes were delish. Just don’t tell Mr 5 that I stole some while he was running off playing on the grassy hills. The Cellar Door restaurant is open Thursday to Sunday

Fig Picking is Open 7 days | 9am – 3pm
These times may change due to functions been held on the property so please check the Glen Ewin website and Willabrand Facebook Page for updates.

Park where you pick your own beautiful large delicious cherries. This year they have a large crop, with loaded trees which makes picking easy, as you don't have to scrounge to find the cherries. The buckets fill easily. The orchards are well maintained and easily accessible for families and elderly. What a great (and delicious) day out for everyone. Entry fee is $5 per adult and $2 per child under 12. This covers the cost of the beautiful cherries you're welcome to consume while picking. The cherries cost less than last year, $7/kg. • Find it at: 10 Sheoak Ave Novar Gardens This local little playground is nestled in the quiet streets of Novar Gardens and sits right next to historic Cummins House. Cummins House was built in 1842 for Sir John Morphett and his wife Elizabeth and were one of Adelaide’s founding families. Once a working farmland for orchards, vines and olives the property also farmed sheep and had a well known horse stud. Today the house and grounds welcome visitors to come along and see how the lives of one of Adelaide’s known families lived. The beautiful gardens are very popular for functions and weddings. The playground is suited for toddlers and has a lovely jungle animal theme. From frogs on the end of the see saw, to turtles and monkeys placed near the 2 slippery dips all adding to the jungle atmosphere . The playground has a couple of bouncing animals, swing set including a baby seat and has a couple of little climbing walls and ropes. Unfortunately this playground has no fence , shade( it is surrounded by large trees )  or toilets so I would suggest a look around Cummins House during visitor hours followed by a short play…
