I cannot believe we haven’t been to Serafino for lunch before, but now we have been once we will definitely be back! Serafino is a wonderful place for a celebratory lunch – the day we visited there were a couple of big birthdays and I can see why it’s the restaurant of choice for such occasions. They have married fine-dining, with brilliant wines, and the kind of grounds that every child dreams of. Oh and did I mention they have on-site accommodation as well so you can stay for a meal, a visit to the cellar door and then retreat to your on room 100m away!

You can’t help but notice the gorgeous large, green spaces as you drive in the entrance to Serafino just out of the main McLaren Vale area. The lake with resident ducks, large expanses of grass just perfect for a game of soccer or cricket and enough room to ensure the playing kids aren’t knocking over anyone else’s picnic when kicking the ball. Its the perfect place for kids to run around and play all afternoon, and can be seen from the main restaurant and cellar door.

The food at Serafino was some of the very best we have had in the Adelaide region. The mix of flavours was amazing with matches like beetroot and goat’s cheese tortellini, or pork with apple, persimmon and mustard.

We had a beautiful range of dishes that included the above, along with scallop cerviche, lamb dumplings, Kangarilla beef fillet and Lenswood duck. The presentation of each dish was second-to-none, with each one showing as much care in the plating of the delicate balance as the chef obviously takes in delivering the flavours.

Kids meals included some delicious takes on some firm favourites. We had the fish & chips and chicken nuggets & chips. The kids meals were both well portioned and came with a side salad, all of which got polished off by our two small people. In between entree and mains at Serafino’s lovely restaurant the kids headed outside to kick the soccer ball and go visit the geese and ducks at the lake.

The entrees and main dishes were delightful, and the desserts were just as memorable. A gorgeous rhubarb cheesecake served 2 ways, pear tart with and a rich chocolate mousse with mandarin gelato were all gobbled up before the kids ever got the chance to ask for a taste!

Of course, the kids didn’t exactly miss out – with a devilish chocolate icecream with chocolate ripples atop with sprinkles ending their meals on a strong point.

When you come for a meal at Serafino, I’d recommend arriving a little early so you have the chance to do some wine tasting at the wonderful cellar door. With a light, ambient room, a warm fire and a large selection of quality wines, you can taste test a few before selecting the wines for your lunch or dinner. The wines we chose for our lunch were the Nebbliolo, Reserve Grenache and the Sav Blanc – all were fabulous.

With Serafino wines hosting their winter chill sessions on 12 and 26th July these are the perfect way to enjoy the day with kids in tow. Held in Serafino’s cosy courtyard, with their awesome wines and delish winter foods, you can also look forward to mulled wine, acoustic music and a fire for roasting marshmallows! See you there 🙂

  • Of all of the wineries we have visited this year? Kimbolton has had the most on offer for kids and families, and we just love this place to bits. From the shady lawn games and kids welcome baskets, to the massive hand they played in the regions 'Grapes for Good' initiative, come take a look at our recent visit. Less than an hour away from the Adelaide CBD lies the Langhorne Creek wine region. Where is Langhorne Creek? Glad you asked. Just a little past Strathalbyn and you will find this fantastic area filled with some breathtaking, often quieter spots to explore. You'd be forgiven for thiking this is Adelaide Hills, it actually falls into Fleurieu Peninsula, but is located between Adelaide Hills and Lake Alexandrina. Built in December 2018, directly on top of the vineyard, Kimbolton is a fun yet sophisticated venue made from shipping containers! Giving you the feel of being right amongst the vines, with a terrific deck up top and opening windows where you can sit and eat cheese and drink wine until your heart is content (or your belly is full….either or). There are two seperate grassed, shady, areas at the cellar door with a…

  • Pizza? Check! Wine? Check! Space for the kids to run and play? Check! Stunning gardens straight out of a fairytale? Check! Mums and Dads, Lazy Ballerina is your ultimate lunch spot nestled between the Fleurieu Peninsula and the Adelaide Hills. As soon as you walk up the path to enter Lazy Ballerina, you will know you have found somewhere special. The gardens are absolutely gorgeous and it is well worth visiting a few times a year to see how they change with the seasons. The best way to experience Lazy Ballerina is to book in for their "Let Us Feed You" menu - they will bring out platters full of local produce followed by delicious wood oven pizzas. It's just $45 per head for adults, $12 for under 7's and $20 for under 15's. Their attentive and friendly staff will just keep bringing pizzas until you tell them to stop! If you're not full from all the pizza, you can purchase dessert and of course, you must indulge in a few glasses of Lazy Ballerina's finest! After our most recent visit, we have some new favourite pizzas - the pear and blue cheese pizza is to die for and the…

  • As we reached the southern Flinders area just near Hawker, we stopped in for lunch at the Cradock Hotel. As a parent who has eaten at hundreds of pubs and restaurants with kids, I will comfortably say this was the best I have ever been too. The nature style playground was amazing, let alone a playground at a pub! Dickie, who has owned the pub for about 3 years, built a lot of it himself and with materials sourced locally from his own property. I found that so cool and from someone who barely has one talent, let alone several, to be able to build that plus run a brilliant pub is really inspiring. As good as the playground is, the large dining room that opens up onto it just really tops it off. The kids can run around while you sit and have a beer (or another type of beer….I didn’t check the wine list sorry) and watch the kids run around. Can’t think of a more nicer pub setting anywhere, let alone in the Flinders. Now the big test. The food. My little food reviewers classed it as ‘The best pub food ever’ which I whole heartedly agreed…
