We love a good pub feed and were excited to head up to Mt Barker to try out one of the best pubs in the hills, not only because we had heard great things about the food, but they have an in-house magician! You heard right! Magic and a schnitty. What bliss!

Each Wednesday from 6pm til 8pm during school holidays (usually it is more often but covid has stuffed the schedule this year of course!), Rich Tieger Magic is in the bistro area ready to entertain the kids (and adults) with his exceptional family friendly tricks and skills. With a combination of magic and card tricks, sleight of hand fun, great banter and some of the best balloon art (because this isn’t your usual balloon dog with a tail) you will see. Our crew absolutely loved Rich’ antics and this really sets a family meal at The Barker above standard pub fare. It was a real treat and we can’t wait to go back.

But how is the pub itself? The Barker is located on the picturesque main street at Mt Barker, right smack bang in the middle of town. A recently updated venue that is spacious and really comfortable, even with a large group and a pram like we had, they currently have several eating areas so there is plenty of room (plus the sports bar and usual gear).

They have all the facilities for those who bring young babies (like we did) as well. The kids menu will sort out even the fussiest of eaters (they were more than happy to modify menu choices for our fussy crew) and is well priced to boot, which is so important with large families (it adds up sooooo quick!). If you are taking small kids they will spread out some activities to keep the kids entertained on your table, which can make or break a family dinner if it stops a tantrum!

The adult meals were great, standard choice pub feeds and if you are a parmy lover like us, you won’t be disappointed. Plenty of local and imported beers to pick from as well, plus all the local wine selection. You can make your booking on line for lunch or dinner, 7 days a week. Perfect! We had a blast, with great food, a modern and big venue and of course the in-house show with magician Rich. We are already making plans to go back a few times during the holidays.

Mt Barker is a fantastic spot for families, only 30 mins from the city up the freeway. Why not make a day of it and check out one of the great playgrounds in the area (Our fave Barker PG here), pop into the incredible Laratinga Wetlands (info on our visit here) to walk off that lunch, or cruise the famous Adelaide Hills!

  • Uraidla Hotel, simultaneously best and worst pub in Uraidla (that's kind of the joke because it is the ONLY pub in Uraidla), but if you are only going to have one pub in a country town it better be a good one right.....? Well let us tell you.....it is. It definitely is! Only 20 minutes from the city (how lucky are we to have this beauty right on our doorstep), this stunning location was perfect when we popped in to help celebrate a family birthday recently. I mean look at the photos, you can almost smell that clean, crisp country air can't you! The kids loved the spacious outdoor areas complete with outdoor games (Jenga for the win), totem tennis and a nice little playground. There's also a footy oval a few metres away. Food wise Mr 7 highly recommends the kids Meatball Macaroni Bake which at just $12 bucks is spot on value wise. Our older kids were left wishing they were under 12 as well so they could try the chicken bacon parmi, and the macaroni bake with cashew cheese sounds delish - and a nice option for kids who are dairy free or vegan. A nice range…

  • Find it at: Seymore Drive, Mt Barker There are a heap of new developments up at Mt Barker (only half hour from the city I might add) and with the expansion has come a bunch of brilliant new playgrounds and other play-spaces. The bonus of Barker is aaaallllll of the space to do all of the things....which sometimes you don't get down the hill in town. A brand spanking new spot is in the Aston Hills development on Seymour Drive Mt Barker, which is on the outskirts of Barker so there is bushland and fresh air aplenty. The playground is massive with some fabulous equipment including swings, slides and rope climbing. Parents can sit in the shaded seating area at the top of the hill overlooking the play area which was pretty cool. It is entirely covered in bark which may cause some issues for some to move around and toilets were lacking (maybe something that could be added later wink wink), but overall a nice little playground. But this wasn’t why we made the trip…. Just beyond the playground, on the other side of the hill, a fantastic Aston Hills Adventure Bike Trail has been created. What is a…

  • A family friendly restaurant with a built in kids cinema? Shut up and take my money! The newly renovated Tower Hotel, out on Magill Road at Magill is a majestic old property that has been an icon in the area since around 1840! The renovations have done wonders, with a number of different areas within the precinct catering to pretty much everyone, with a great family area, spacious outdoor area that would be perfect in summer and sports and cocktail bars. During our visit with the fam, we sat in the lovely family seating room adjacent to the kids cinema. Thats right it has its own cinema, complete with raised bench seating and projector, it was actually hard to get the kids back to the table to eat their food. Speaking of the food, the kids menu has everything you want here at a good price ($10 bucks which includes a small ice cream for dessert), but it would be remiss of us to not mention that the kids hotdog is about half a metre long. Credit to Mr 7 who gave it all he could, but it is good to know that your kids won't leave here hungry. For…
