As a bit of a southerner who doesn’t often venture to the northern side of town, I hadn’t spent much time out Tea Tree Gully way. At the door step of the northern part of the Adelaide Hills, The Gully Public House & Garden has been there 150+ years, but this isn’t the place you may remember. The first thing that strikes you when you come here is the realisation this isn’t just another pub. With a recently renovated beer garden, now look I think beer garden probably doesn’t quite do it justice, because this multi-level space is just breathtaking. Think a Bali resort without the Bintang singlets. No shock to learn they have won awards for best beer garden.
There are a few different eating spaces here but we chose, not surprisingly, the beer garden. Sitting up on the top tier next to a fantastic little bar, with a heap of comfortable and spacious seating areas overlooking the ‘ginormous’ (Mr 5 – Actual quote) TV, it was just a brilliant spot for our large fam to spread out and relax.
After being sort of blown away by how cool the place was, we sort of didn’t expect the food to be much more than standard pub fare. Couldn’t have really been more wrong to be honest. They offered a really good selection of well priced ($9.90) kids meals (uh with ice cream for dessert too!) and for the adults there’s a great range to choose from. The wood oven pizza was delicious and Miss 15 loved the chicken schnitty. With a sometimes (always) fussy family of kids of all ages, for once there were absolutely no complaints and it wasn’t hard for them to pick what to have. Bliss!
Will save the best for last though, with the whole fam enjoying some incredible dessert milk shakes. You know the sort, the insta worthy creations with a mix of chocolates and lollies and all the sugar. But where usually you pay upwards of $30 or more for a ridiculous huge monstrosity that either never gets finished or tastes like garbage, the Gully have perfectly sized shakes that taste great and look amazing for just $9 bucks. If you have trouble finding them on the menu (think my eyes are playing tricks) make sure you ask the amazing staff and they will hook you up with a sugar fix.
The dessert just topped off an amazing family dinner where everyone gave it top marks. In fact, Mr 5 gave it 100 out of 10. Not a bad score and well deserved. Even Miss 11, who literally never likes anything, gave it a solid 9. That is as good as perfect.
Don’t forget to check their Facebook page for the latest promos. At the moment kids eat free on Tuesdays and also from Sunday to Wednesday kids eat free before 6:30pm. They also run a variety of kids activities throughout the school holidays including kids cooking classes and petting zoos. Follow them on Facebook to find out what’s on.
Cannot recommend this place highly enough.
