While Roonka River Adventure Park has been creating memorable river adventures for more than 50 years, it’s one of the hidden family-friendly gems of the Riverland! Owned and operated by Scouts SA, it’s already well known and loved by those in the Scouting community (and savvy school camp organisers). Now families and groups of friends are discovering Roonka’s experience-based camping and group accommodation nestled on a lush, tranquil riverbank near Blanchetown.
About an hour and forty minutes north-east of Adelaide, the Roonka experience is built around a love of water activities and the outdoors, designed to help you ‘disconnect to reconnect’ with each other … and nature.
Kids delight in the flying fox over the private billabong, where they can also safely learn to paddle watercraft. The waterslide into the river is also a firm favourite! Adults and confident paddlers can hire kayaks and canoes (or bring their own) to explore Reedy Island and the peaceful backwaters of Roonka Conservation Park. There are plenty of land-based activities, including orienteering courses, a photo hunt, playground and Echidna Nature Trail. Or simply throw in a line, try your hand at yabbying, or relax with a book under one of the majestic gums. Then share stories of your adventures around the campfire (outside fire danger season) and enjoy the star gazing that comes with Roonka’s idyllic location on the fringe of the Dark Sky Reserve.
With air-conditioned bunkhouse accommodation sleeping up to 58 guests across six rooms, bell tent hire, camping for small or large groups, and powered caravan sites, Roonka is ideal for school camps, celebrations, cultural and community groups, sporting and social clubs – and families looking for some good old-fashioned, screen-free fun and relaxation.
Guests have unlimited access to adventure activities and facilities including a boat ramp (no jet skis), fully equipped camp kitchen, undercover dining, BBQs, campfire circles (seasonal) and bathrooms… with flushing toilets and hot showers!
While Roonka has everything to keep you entertained for days, it’s also the perfect base to explore the gorgeous Riverland region, with a great range of local attractions.
Full site hire is available, and Roonka is pet friendly! Small to medium dogs are welcome on lead, outside of buildings.
Pre-bookings are essential.
Roonka has all the feelgood vibes, with all profit returned to Scouts SA to help young South Australians achieve their personal best in all areas, including leadership, resilience confidence and responsible independence.
Find it at: HIgh Street. Morgan We love a themed playground. Anything with a train is pretty much a certain winner with most kids, so a playground with a train AND a paddle steamer to climb in and on is double the fun! You'll find this playground in the Riverland town of Morgan about 2 hours drive from Adelaide. Choose your method of ascent (stairs, rope ladder or climbing wall) and scale to the top of the paddle steamer for great views of the Murray.Across the train track you'll find more play and climbing equipment including slides, swings, climbing walls, naughts and crosses and a firemans pole. There's some great nature play elements in this park with lots of large rocks, logs and stepping stones dotted around that kids will love to climb and balance on. There's also a sandpit. There's a huge sloped grass area with room to kick a ball and also get some good speed up on a roly poly down the hill. There's BBQ facilities and picnic benches and toilets are available near the river. Local shops are nearby so you can grab some snacks and a drink on the way there.
