  • The Adelaide Gaol is one of the oldest remaining colonial public buildings in Adelaide and is the site of some of the State's more interesting, grisly past. Experience what life was like behind bars for the prisoners who once called the Adelaide Gaol their home. The Adelaide Gaol housed some of the state's most notorious and dangerous criminals. Almost 300,000 prisoners whiled away some time at His (or Her) Majesty's pleasure, and 45 unfortunates were executed within its walls - including the only woman to be executed in South Australia. Approximately 300,000 prisoners passed through the Gaol during its working years and 45 people were executed. Their bodies are buried within the grounds of the Gaol. The first public hanging took place in November 1840 while the site was still under construction.
