Journey into Miniature Worlds: Bioactive Terrariums for Kids

October 4th & 7th 11:30am to 12:30pm

Helen’s Mini Worlds is running two kids terrarium making workshops this school holidays. In this one-hour workshop, you will design and create a tiny, living, bioactive terrarium complete with a figurine of your choice. Along the way, Helen, who has a science degree and a passion for nature, will teach you about the science behind terrariums and why we call them tiny, bioactive ecosystems!

What is a bioactive terrarium?
A bioactive terrarium contains more than just plants. We add little insects, called springtails, that help eat the nasty stuff in the terrarium, creating a healthier ecosystem. This is what occurs in nature (but on a much smaller scale!).
You will not only take home your very own bioactive terrarium world, but also all the information you need to care for it and a wealth of new knowledge about the natural world.

The perfect mix of science and creativity, creating an experience like no other. This workshop is suitable for ages 7-13. It provides an introduction to terrariums and ecosystem science. No prior knowledge or experience is required.

Limited spots available, head to www.helensminiworlds.com to book your ticket(s).

Learn about Australia’s current and future role in space at the Discovery Centre, which hosts: a Careers Information Hub showcasing rewarding and diverse career pathways in the local space industry, an operational Mission Control Centre viewable through a theatrette for live space events, industry guest speakers and opportunities to engage with space experts, and an interactive space exhibition offering immersive, hands-on experiences.

Open every day in the school holidays from 11 AM to 5 PM, with special activities as listed below.

Operation Storytime (Ages 3-8)
All little-astronauts are invited in-centre for space storytime. Each session will begin with a reading of a space book followed by an activity before attendees are invited to explore the Space Gallery.

Student Cadet Rocket Adventure Program (S.C.R.A.P) Challenge (Ages 7-14)
Flex your engineering creativity in this paper rocket design challenge! Participants will build, launch, and refine their rocket designs to discover how to fly as high and as accurately as possible.

Solar System Explorers (Ages 5-12)
Explore our Solar System, investigate what makes each planet unique, and find out why human-like life doesn’t thrive on planets other than Earth. Participants will then apply what they’ve discovered to invent a vehicle that they could use to explore a planet, moon, or asteroid of their choice.

Plants In Space (Ages 7-14)
As humans continue to explore space and go on longer missions, to the Moon and further to Mars, plants will come along with us. Astronauts have been nurturing space gardens on the International Space Station for decades, but we are still finding the best ways to grow plants in space. What do we need for plants to thrive off-Earth? How can we produce enough food for the astronauts in this new environment and encourage sustainability?

Operation: Goldilocks (Online Only – Ages 5-12)
Discover some of the secrets to life in our Solar System through the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bearable Planets. Join us and explore worlds beyond Earth using NASA’s Eyes interactive solar system app, and use what you’ve learned to design a vehicle to explore your favourite extra-terrestrial location.
