SteamRanger’s Southern Encounter departs from Mount Barker. Sit back for a relaxing journey back in time!
The train departs Mount Barker, traveling through the back of the township and then you’ll find yourself in the bush! Listen as our locomotive powers up for the climb to Philcox Hill, the highest point of the line. It’s from this point you’ll have to be on the lookout for Kangaroos hopping along the side of the track!
After exiting out of the Adelaide Hills we are on the plans and into the Scottish village of Strathalbyn! Continuing across the plains and onto the towering viaducts of Black Swamp, Finniss and Currency Creek you’ll then find yourself in the waterfront towns of Goolwa and Port Elliot. As the locomotive climbs out of Port Elliot the coast greets the train. From your carriage window the Southern Ocean greets you with a wave. If you look across Encounter Bay you may have to look out for a whale or two!
You’ll roughly have 2 hours in Victor Harbor, plenty of time to get lunch, and have a wonder around this beautiful town! Why not take a stroll across to Granite Island?
A late afternoon departure with our Buffet Car on board means you can sit back and relax in the carriage with a coffee or tea on the way home as you retrace yout journey back to Mount Barker.

This fun guided tour will take you through the ruins of the Moonta Mines once the backbone of the South Australian economy. Experience how the famous Cornish Miners built this very profitable mine with commentary provided on this 45 minute tour.
Whilst you are there a visit to the Moonta Mines Museum is a must – housed in the old Moonta School – see and listen to the way the children experienced school in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in the interactive School Room. You can’t miss a visit to the Old Sweet Shop – a wonderland of delights. There is lots to see and do when you visit this famous Cornish Mine Site now proudly National Heritage.
Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is the only place on mainland South Australia where you may see the elusive platypus. The Sanctuary is also a thriving eco-system where hundreds of Australian native animals flourish. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, potoroos, bettongs, and birds, rarely seen outside the feral-proof fence, all live safe and protected at Warrawong.
Be sure to check out the daily show itinerary when you arrive and you could meet a python, emu chick, lizard or koala, learn all about dingoes, see a wildlife show and more.
Or for something really special, experience the life of a professional animal keeper for a day with the Warrawong Junior Keeper program. Open to children 6 to 16 years of age, this incredible, behind-the-scenes experience allows young animal lovers to feed, pat, hold, and care for a huge range of animals at the Sanctuary.
Places in the Warrawong Junior Keeper program are extremely limited. Only 5 children can participate each day so it’s advised you book early to avoid missing out.

October school holidays at the museums
Search for the weird and wonderful things in the History Trust museum collections these school holidays with the School Holiday Scavenger Hunts!
With a Hunt to complete at the Migration Museum, National Motor Museum, South Australian Maritime Museum and Centre of Democracy, you could become a veritable sleuth by the end of these school holidays. As you explore the museums, find the five quirky objects listed on the Scavenger Hunt worksheet, which you can download on our website or collect at the museum entrance. Take a photo in front of each object to show you found it. There is also a bonus object you can find, but you must first solve a riddle!
When you’re finished, simply show your photos to a Museum Officer to receive a stamp on your worksheet. You can also earn a one-hour stamp for your Children’s University Passport to Learning when you complete this activity. Challenge your friends to see who can find the hidden and sometimes unexpected things at all of our museums!
