BRAND NEW SAPOL Road Safety Centre West Beach opening August 2024

With the upcoming new Women’s and Children’s hospital, the Port Road Safety Centre will be moving in mid 2024! The brand new facility, which will form part of the West Beach Parks precinct on Military Road, will allow the Centre to open up to the wider community and help continue to disseminate vital road safety messaging. There will be a mock roadway with traffic lights and pedestrian crossings making a fantastic spot for young riders to bring their own bike/scooter and helmet and practice their riding skills in a safe environment.

Check out the concept art of the new proposed complex below. We will update with new photos and information as we get it.

Until that time the SA Police, SAPOL Road Safety Centre at Thebarton Police Barracks continues to be available for public use, however, power continues to be switched off during that time, affecting traffic lights, the pedestrian crossing, school crossing and railway crossing. It is available free of charge but you need to bring your own bike or scooter and safety equipment.

Find it at: Bonython Park, Port Road, Adelaide (Moving to Military Road West Beach in mid 2024)

Once the kids tire of the safety centre, they can ride past the Police horses (signs indicate you need to take care and don’t feed or pat them) and over to the awesome Bonython Park Playground – always a winner with its nature based play areas and cool new equipment.

Please note that the nearest toilets are located a few hundred metres away – out the Northern gate and at the edge of the oval towards the Bonython Park playground. Also, the mock traffic lights are not in operation after hours and cannot be turned on using the phone number on the control box. If the ‘DO NOT ENTER’ signs are up, please do not use the mock roadway as it is booked for a session. Call 8207 4668 to check availability.

  • The Bower Road Bike Park is located at the Aquatic Reserve In West Lakes Shores on the corner of Old Port Road and Bower Road.  We found it particularly good for advanced riders as we haven’t seen many other bike parks of this level in SA. If you want something to compare it against and you’re familiar with the track off Greenhill/Unley roads in the CBD then this Bower Road Bike Park is more suited to riders of the CBD’s intermediate and (often closed) advanced tracks. The location has been used as a BMX track, however over the last decade the track has not had the attention it received in years gone by. In 2013 a group of local residents school groups and the Charles Sturt Council got together to start discussing ways to improve the park and redevelop it to provide a fully functioning bike park that was as good as the facilities being developed overseas and in other parts of Australia. Through the efforts of volunteers in collaboration with the council the park currently has a kids BMX track, an advanced BMX track, Dirt Jumps and a Pump Track. Our confident 5-6 year old bike riders are comfortable…

  • Adelaide has a number of places that you can take your kids to learn to ride a bike, scooter or skateboard. Some of them are speciality bike safety centres where you can learn about road rules, giving way, understanding road signs etc and some of them are playgrounds or parks that have great flat, concrete areas perfect for learning to ride and not get run over by the big kids in the skatepark or have to worry about too much other bike traffic. Some of our favourites are:
