Toilet training. It’s not my favourite part of raising children, but I’ve always felt SO proud when the penny finally drops, and the child is successful. However, once toilet training during the day is mastered, then comes the challenge of toilet training during nap times, and at night. Obviously, this goes hand in hand with a LOT of wet sheets and a LOT of washing!

To be honest, one of my biggest tips for toilet training overnight is to double-sheet the bed (eg. waterproof mattress protector, fitted sheet, waterproof mattress protector, fitted sheet) so that it’s easier to remove the sheets in the middle of the night, without having to fiddle around to replace them. But since trying Protect-A-Bed mattress protectors, we’ve been feeling much more confident about the kids’ mattresses not turning yellow and also not having to repeatedly buy new mattress protectors or waterproof sheets.

We have recently trialled a few different sheets for our 2-and-a-half-year-old who has been toilet trained during the day for a while now. She has sensitive skin, so the Protect-A-Bed range really suits her. The Cotton Terry Mattress Protector not only protects against dust mites and allergens, but obviously protects the mattress from the inevitable bed wettings we are experiencing now she doesn’t wear a pull-up at night. I didn’t know before, but the Protect-A-Bed mattress protectors are the #1 selling brand of mattress protectors world wide. Needless to say, I had high hopes, and this particular mattress protector is best for bedwetting and spills.

Investigating the loot

The most impressive thing for Miss 2 about the mattress protector was that it wasn’t all crunchy underneath her fitted sheet. We have other mattress protectors, and if they’re not crunchy, then they’re crinkly. The Protect-A-Bed range have a patented “Miracle Layer” that really make them much more comfortable to sleep on.

The most impressive thing for me was that it soaked up the moisture really quickly and there wasn’t that tangy wee smell that wafts through the room after a bedwetting. It’s also really easy to put the sheets on so it makes life easier in general! I’m also really pleased that the Protect-A-Bed mattress protector protects the mattress from yellowing (I’ve always found this really gross!).

We experimented with pouring liquid onto the mattress protector and seeing how damp the mattress was underneath. But the kids felt underneath the sheet and there was NO dampness whatsoever, not even on the underside of the sheet. Check out the video for our reactions.

My 3-year-old daughter has also tried out two of the Protect-A-Bed mattress protectors. The Signature Tencel Mattress Protector was “So soft, Mummy. Like a bunny rabbit!” We will also use this for Miss 2 as it’s ideal for people with sensitive skin, rhinitis, or eczema. It’s made from odourless wood-based fibres, so it stays cool in Summer, and warm in Winter plus it’s waterproof, which is super important for those overnight accidents that sometimes still happen. It’s also pleasing that all the sheets are expandable so if I want to use the sheets on a different single bed, with a deeper mattress then I know it’ll still fit. Obviously, this also saves money in the long run too.

The other thing that makes this particular product worth investing in is that they are machine washable and can be put in the tumble dryer. WOOHOO!

Why you should invest in quality mattress protectors for your family:

1. Ensure a healthy sleep environment for you and your family by protecting against dust mite allergens that are present in our mattresses and pillows, that 30% of the population are allergic to and are a common cause of asthma and other allergies. (The Tencel range is also approved by the Eczema Association as Sensitive Skin Tried and Tested, which is why we really wanted this range for our 2 year old.)

2. All products are approved by National Asthma Council Australia and Single Bed sizes are Red Nose (SIDS and Kids) approved. This is really important for many families.

3. Protect-A-Bed’s patented Miracle Layer soaks up liquid quickly, and prevents sweat and skin flakes from staining the mattress. PLUS did I mention they are machine washable!!! (great for a quick turn around when washing sheets in the winter!)

4. If you’re thinking of investing in new sheets mattress protectors, whether it’s for yourself, the kids or even something like beds at a rental property, then I’d recommend Protect-A-Bed sheets. If you’re currently pregnant and are looking forward to all the leaking that comes with childbirth and breastfeeding, then it’d be worth investing in these sheets too. #saveyourmattress!

  • As an Aunty to several beautiful nieces and nephews, I’m always looking for new activities to do to keep them all fit, healthy and happy. Pilates is a great activity for kids. It improves flexibility, strength, balance and posture, assists to maintain an ideal bodyweight, assists with injury rehabilitation, encourages participation in regular exercise, and improves self esteem among many other benefits. Whether your child is the next Olympian or you just want to encourage involvement in some type of physical activity, Pilates can be suited to any fitness level. Pilates for adults often requires a great deal of concentration and focus but with children Pilates needs to be fun and more about just moving. It’s about developing good body awareness and good mind body control by incorporating Pilates based exercises and principles into play. This can be achieved by using lots of tools such as foam rollers, gym balls and chi balls; as well as making up games like renaming the exercises after animals. Pilates is similar to karate, ballet and gymnastics in that it does teach children a level of calm, coordination and control. Children who don’t otherwise find a sport or physical activity appealing might like the…

  • When it comes to packing lunchboxes for kids, there's a lot of pressure to ensure the food is 'nude', raw, organic and homemade. If you're like a lot of parents, this can be tricky. Things like work, other children, illness or even access to these kinds of foods can all play a role in what types of food your children receive in their lunchboxes each day. Rather than stressing about all the different rules, maybe it's best to keep it simple? Here are some tips from Fleur, who is a primary school teacher.....she knows! Keep it colourful- add carrots, capsicum, cucumber and cheese. As long as there's lots of naturally colourful foods then you're on the right track! Get the kids involved in making their own snacks on the weekend. These could be muesli bars, muffins, fruit & coconut balls, yoghurt dipped fruit or try Julie's delicious homemade roll ups! Getting the kids involved will not only keep them interested in what they eat, but it also helps them learn about how foods are made, what types of foods are healthy and provides them with a sense of ownership over what they're putting in their lunchbox. Another great part of…
