Yee-haw! It’s time to round up the whole family for a meal at the South Eastern Hotel in Mount Gambier. This Limestone Coast town has no shortage of pubs to dine at, but this one surely has to be one of the most family friendly – there really is something for everyone! Older kids can kick back and watch the footy on one of the big screens, younger kids can enjoy the indoor playground and the Mums can enjoy a wine or two (maybe even a cocktail?) in one of the outdoor areas.
The South Eastern really has a country feel to it, right down to the exposed timber beams in the dining area, the corregated iron partitions and and old wagon out the front. The country hospitality doesn’t end with the décor however, with the menu boasting lots of country faves and great service to match.
Why is the South Eastern Hotel so great for families? The kids will be running to the indoor playground as soon as they are in the door. It’s in a separate room off of the main dining area but with glass windows and doors so you can still see your little cherubs. It’s a soft play style playground, so get them to kick their shoes off and go for it. They’ll enjoy the slides, climbing ramp and the helicopter to play in.
There are also a couple of TVs with ABC Kids on, so if your child is ready for some downtime, you can just let them sit and watch while they wait for their meal.
On that note, let’s get onto the meals – the menu is HUGE! It has plenty of daily specials including soup, roast, pasta and more, as well as pub favourites and grill specials. The kids menu includes no less than TEN choices, including two types of pizza, stir fry and even dippy dogs! $15 will get you their meal and a pop top juice or kids soft drink.
From the main menu, the stir fry was the standout for us – it was HUGE!
Can’t believe we haven’t even mentioned the salad and veg bar yet! Selected items from the menu include the salad bar and you can choose from a wide range of salads, vegetables and sides – who doesn’t love a salad bar?!
The South Eastern Hotel is definitely a dining experience for the whole family so pop it on your list next time you are in the Limestone Coast region.

We stumbled upon this playground purely by chance while taking a drive around the Mount Gambier Lakes Region and definitely had an OH MY GOD HOW DID WE NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS moment. It is a fantastic, fully fenced, HUGE playground with one of the most scenic outlooks in South Australia. Regional towns usually have excellent playground and the Limestone Coast have really outdone themselves with the Valley Lake Playground. As we mentioned, it is fully fenced – as it’s right next to a lake, this is super important so even the grassy reserve next door is fenced. Obviously still keep an eye on adventurous toddlers with the water so close, but you can breathe a bit easier knowing they don’t have direct access to the lake or carpark. The playground itself is split into about six different sections with sealed paths between each area. There is a climbing section, a ninja course area, a maze, an accessible playground, a pirate ship, a digger and sand section and just some general play equipment – something for everyone and all ages. When we visited there were toddlers enjoying the digging pit right through to teens giving the more challenging climbing frames…

Intrigued by the name on a recent trip to the South East (Limestone Coast), we couldn't help but divert 14 km south of Keith to check out Mount Monster Conservation Park. Turns out it's claim to fame is not really that monstrous at all, but is home to an unusual geological feature, that seems quite out of place, a big granite outcrop that can't be found any where else in SA. A short hike (more of a rock scramble - achievable with kids) to the summit rewarded us with uninterrupted views over the area and would make for a pretty cool sunset spot. For the inquisitive (not my kids on this occasion), an interpretive self-guided walk around the base of the granite outcrop will reveal some of the secrets of Mount Monster. We saw some pretty fascinating wildflowers, bird life and kangaroos in the distance. It is apparently not uncommon to come across wallabies, echidna, woodland birds, and reptiles. Our highlight was skimming rocks in an old water filled quarry. A great spot for a picnic and we highly recommend a meal or refreshment break at the Willalooka Tavern near by. (We knocked back a dozen oysters and some wood…
