Visiting Yorke Peninsula with kids in any season – it’s right up there with the best local holiday at home you will find in SA. Yorkes is full of hidden gems like this great family friendly distillery that we stumbled across during a recent trip over to ‘the leg’ on what must have been the most magnificent day of all winter. I mean, not a single filter was used on these pics, so this gives you an idea of how beautiful it is. Imagine this view + sitting on the balcony with the gin, liqueur or vodka of your choice (try them all with a little all out tasting). How lucky are we to have this on our doorstep at a nudge under 2hrs from the city? It’s easily in reach for a day trip even, or get away for the weekend with the family! We stayed very near by at Red Wing Farm

We could bang on about gin science, and how the farmland sprawling out in front of you is responsible for the very wheat used to make their own vodka (most places import their alcohol base…..apparently), which forms the alcohol base for the gins and liqueurs, but you want to know why this is a good spot to take the kids right? Well what we absolutely bloody loved, was that kids drinks here were FREE! So while we sat down and tried a few flights of gins, vodkas and liqueurs, our little crew got free drinks (in our case it was a bunch of free ginger beer!) How good is that. Plus bringing your own food is totally allowed, so they just sat down and ate a bunch of snacks that we had brought along. Easy as.

The distillery is owned and operated by Sam and Olivia, who have really made sure there is plenty to keep the kids entertained and really open this up to family days out. Our kids loved making use of the huge grassed area, with a whole range of ball and other games for them to play. Name something better than lush grass, a good gin, happy kids and a brilliant blue sky….we’ll wait. Oh…..and it’s dog friendly. What a spot!

The spirits here are award winning (we walked out with the vodka which was a real surprise packet) and you can shop online, pop in for their regular in house events or book a tour of their distillery. Our kids love checking out the huge reaction vessels at these sort of places so you will be pleased to know they are all on display and the kids can have a look in the tasting room. Speaking of, what a beautiful and spacious room it is, perfect for any sized family if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

During school terms you will find them open Friday to Sunday (11 til 6) and in school holidays from Wednesday to Sunday (Also 11 til 6), with long weekend Mondays also getting a run.

Find them at: 8658 Upper Yorke Road, Arthurton (30mins out of Port Wakefield up at the top of Yorkes and a stones throw from Moonta)

Check them out;

  • We recently did a huge 11 night trip to the Yorke Peninsula with the kids in tow - fantastic trip, but by the time we got to our second to last stop, we were running a bit low on the food we had packed when we left home and who has time for supermarket shopping on holiday? Enter, Grazing Yorkes! We got in touch with Emily and ordered a cheese platter box and a breakfast box and she delivered them direct to our accommodation so once we checked in, we could settle back with a drink and graze the afternoon away! How convenient and a little bit special too, which is what you want when you are having a weekend away right? It's such a dream, you can order these and have them delivered any where around the Copper Coast (small delivery fee may apply depending exactly where you want the boxes to show up - but Moonta, Wallaroo & Kadina are free!) The grazing box included several cheeses, crackers, dips, strawberries, cured meats and more. We loved it, the kids loved it and there was PLENTY - so much that we had enough for sunset nibbles the next night…

  • What is a cowie.....? Great question and you can find out the answers behind the name of this business + a bit of local knowledge when you visit this epic family friendly BELTER of a craft brewery. Located in Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula about two and a half hours from Adelaide, you'll find your self surrounded by the wholesome goodness of many, many Yorke Peninsula activities and attractions that are great with kids and even better washed down with one of these beers. You will love the casual, funky, relaxed open air feel of this 'beer shed' (Can we call it a beer shed?) With loads of indoor seating, a cosy fireplace and plenty of outdoor tables too. It feels like a bit of a hub for the community, but also a solid asset to local tourism. There's no kitchen at this brewery, but check in with the Watsacowie website, or social media accounts, as they often have the best of the local food trucks serving up top beer nosh. We fully lucked it with YP Wood Oven Pizzas on our visit and that sure kept the kids happy so as Dad (that's me) could enjoy his exceptional (and…

  • Find it at: Trevor Terrace and Craigburn Road, Blackwood Who loves a double playground? Of course you do! Blackwood Hill Reserve, funnily enough located up in the backstreets of Blackwood next to the footy club, is a huge complex offering not only the use of the pristine footy club oval (dare say Saturdays it may be busy in winter though!), but cool little playgrounds on either side.  What you might find cool like we did, is apart from the playgrounds and the oval, the Blackwood Hill Reserve is a great starting point to jump on the walking trails that wind around the area . Beautiful trees and scrub (nice and open though from what we saw if you…like me….are a snake scaredy cat) make it a top spot for a hike or to ride your bikes. Park where we did at the footy oval and the huge signs will clearly pan out your trek or ride if you want to give it a crack. The main playground is a beauty. Something a bit different which the kids loved. Fairly challenging (but not impossible) for Mr 5 and some good high ninja opportunities for the older kids, it was cool to…
