Bean and Bikkie Co – Gingerbread Cafe

East, Family Friendly Cafes in Adelaide, Family Friendly Eats

Everyone loves gingerbread. The smell is like a magnet for the food enthusiast, drawing you in off the street like a mermaid’s song. We have long been admirers of Bean and Bikkie Co and are sad to see they are no longer in Hahndorf, however we have popped past their Beulah Park location this week (top of The Parade) and it’s nothing short of brilliant.

There is no better place for coffee and a gingerbread man (come on…just look at them), with the little ones tucking into the cutest babyccino’s, they also offer a fabulous café style menu that the whole family will get around.

We consider ourselves brunch aficionados here and highly rated the variety on offer, with the breakfast burger a real hit and a range of options to suit everyone’s taste buds. For those wondering, the poached egg test was passed with flying colours, and the older teens accompanying us loved the juices. The babyccino was also such a good option for our 2yo, who actually drank most of it rather than spilling it down his front….made for a nice change.

Our biggest highlight on our recent visit, was sitting in the gorgeous garden. It’s always a winner to have an out door area with kids in tow.

Now, it would be remiss of us to visit an artisan gingerbread shop and not speak about the gingerbread. Made on-site, by hand, using the finest locally sourced ingredients, this would have to be right up there with the best gingerbread on offer in SA (oh and you have to try the gingerbread spiced latte….amazing!). They have a huge range, which allows you to really cater your pick to your budget. We couldn’t go past these huge reindeer on a stick and thought for $7.50 it was excellent value. We love the complimentary gingerbread cookie provided with every coffee too.

Try one of the DIY kits to take home and decorate your own creation, or pick up a gift for your gingerbread loving mate (actually…grab two and eat one on the way home. Treat yo self!)

Only a stones throw from the city, just East of Portrush Road on The Parade at Beulah Park, this one is definitely a specialty destination café worth traveling for.

  • Find it at: Main St, Hahndorf Hahndorf is one of the best day trip locations in our fabulous state. Seriously nothing better than a walk along Main Street, popping  into the little shops for a treat or an ice cream, then washing it all down with a litre of beer from a stein and a few kilos of meat (Hahndorf Inn you have my heart....but I digress) There has always been a couple of small playgrounds in Hahndorf but the recent re-development of the Alec Johnson Park (centre of town on Main Street) has meant there is now something equally as fab for the kids to do on the trip.  The new playground is fantastic. Lots of families were enjoying the spot during our visit and there was plenty of room and equipment for everyone to use and enjoy. The facilities are not too bad either, with a toilet, some shade from the lovely trees in the area and some shaded seating plus BBQs. Parking is a little dependent on when you go as Hahndorf will either be busier than the Royal Show or you will have the place to yourself. The under 10 crowd will love this the most,…

  • Find it at: Mount Barker Rd, Bridgewater This stunning playground is just about everything we love about a day out in our beautiful Adelaide Hills. Coffee, stunning scenery and a fab playground for all ages. Located just below the Bridgewater Mill, the playground is fenced along the road and edges but NOT on the creek bed, which in my opinion is great because it allows kids to take there shoes off and go for a good explore in the creek bed. When we were there it was only about ankle deep with some deeper sections under the bridge, so you'll need to use your discretion based on your kids abilities and what's happening in the creek the day you visit. During winter and after a big rain, the creek can get quite deep and fast, so it will change during the year. We had a great time crossing the stone path, splashing in the water and saying hello to the resident ducks who were cooling off on this 34 degree day! The playground itself is not shaded, but there are lots of little nooks and crannies to sit under the shade of either the trees that surround the park or…

  • Cleland Wildlife Park is home to some of Australia's most iconic animals. You'll find kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, wombats, dingoes, many species of birds and reptiles and more. There are very few animal enclosures at Cleland. Most animals live in natural habitat and you can get up close for great photos. The animals are fully adapted to the park setting and accustomed to people, meaning you can pat and feed them. It's more than just looking at animals. You can do a range of experiences including an echindna experience, private koala feed, reptile experiences and birthday parties. And the animals at the park are used to being patted so they will be happy to see you! You can get up close and personal with the koalas and join a guided tours or animal presentation. Cleland is also home to South Australia’s only Butterfly Enclosure and guided tours are available Tuesday - Saturday. Walk amongst and interact with many species of colourful and spectacular butterflies. Learn all about their fascinating life cycle, the importance of butterflies in our environment and how you can attract butterflies to your own gardens. It's so close to Adelaide (less than 20 minutes from the city centre.)…

  • Exploring your own backyard with the kids and finding secret little spots you didn't know about, is one of the best things about being a parent (apart from the constant thanks they give you for all the sacrifices you make...Ha!). Adelaide is full of tunnels and with not all of them still in use, some are now actually quite beautiful spots to visit and explore with the kids. Some are also probably scary AF but lets take the good with the bad shall we! Littlehampton Twin Tunnels Constructed when the South Eastern Freeway was built back in the mid 90s, the rail track hasn't been in service since the mid 1980s (Steamranger leases the track and use it for service cars on rare occasions) However if you are like me and are fond of scaring the children for fun, you might forget to remind them that it is no longer in service. It is the small things as parents that help you get through the day isn't it. We recommend parking on Childs Road at Littlehampton, which is the start of the Pedestrian Underpass and walk through. The 75 meter long pedestrian tunnel is actually quite stunning. Painted by street…
