Coffee Barn and Gelateria, Moonta

Copper Coast, Family Friendly Eats, Regional Eats, Yorke Peninsula

If you take a trip to Moonta and only stay in the main street or on the foreshore, you’re doing it wrong! Head less than 5 minutes from the Moonta town centre, down Spencer Hwy and you’ll find the hidden gem, that is the Coffee Barn and Gelateria! Well, we say hidden but the Coffee Barn and Gelateria is such a Copper Coast icon, that everyone in town will be telling you to visit anyway!

Carl and Emma bought the business a few years ago and have worked hard to stay true to the vision of the original owners (all the gelati is still made onsite!) while injecting their own fresh ideas and personality. The first thing you will notice is that this isn’t your run of the mill scoop shop! Even the carpark has personality with the old cars, statues and wheel on display. Once you get in, there are several areas to choose from including outside at the front, in a courtyard off to the side, under the large enclosed verandah area or inside the homey cafe.

The gelati freezer will tempt you right away, but don’t overlook the baked goods in the cabinet on the other side! (Have something from each side we say!) There is also a menu full of dessert delights, so take your time to choose.

While you are deciding, the kids can play with the outdoor giant games – pay close attention to the giant Jenga! Carl has lovingly branded each block as well as adding some extra challenges to the game. It’s certainly not your everyday Jenga set! If it’s a cold or wet day, you’ll also find some board games inside, so either way the kids will be occupied.

We judge all cafes by their hot chocolate and this one was a winner! The kids also loved their smoothies but of course the star of the show was the gelati. The kids went for the “Especially For Kids” option which was a sundae (they get to choose their own gelati flavour), topped with cream, smarties, marshmallows and chocolate topping. Sugar overload? Yes. Worth it to see the looks on their faces when it was brought out? Also, yes.

For us adults, we treated ourselves to a serve of the donuts and the waffles – of course, topped with our choice of gelati flavour! Both were delicious in that “I’m sooooo full, but I also want more” kind of way!

The final delight was a babyccino for the kids. Carl and Emma have been working hard on their babyccinos (expect to see them vying for Best Babyccino in our annual comp next year!) and the result is gorgeous. The drinks are beautifully presented on branded boards, complete with ice cream themed handmade chocolates. So cute!

Did we mention the puppaccinos yet? Yep, the Coffee Barn and Gelateria are also dog friendly and you can grab a treat for your pooch too, also all completely made in house!

The Coffee Barn and Gelateria is a true labour of love for Carl and Emma – have a chat to them about their story and how they came to be a part of one of the most iconic spots on the Copper Coast! It’s a regular spot for us to visit on our trips to Yorke Peninsula, make sure it’s on your itinerary too! As for their most popular flavour? According to Carl it changes all the time, so just try them all!

  • Find it at: Bay Rd, Moonta Regional towns often have great playgrounds and the playspace in Moonta is no exception. This playground is looking its age, but it still does the job! There's something for all ages here - little kids will love the sandpit and some of the toddler play equipment, kids tall enough will love the monkey bars and flying fox and older kids will enjoy the basketball half court - just remember to take a ball! This playground also has a bike track complete with traffic signs and road markings! Perfect for kids learning to ride, as it's nice and flat. There are also a couple of swing sets so you don't need to worry about arguments over whose turn it is! The trees give plenty of shade, but there is also a bit shaded verandah area with tables - you could really set yourself up for the day here! At the time of our visit (April 2023), new toilets were being installed which will be a great upgrade. There is also a maze - this was roped off during out visit but we are assuming it's because it is right next door to where the building…

  • Every night once the sun goes down, the silos at Wallaroo come alive with a light show for the whole family! So grab the kids, jump in the car and park down by the Jetty to enjoy the show. The show starts at different times throughout the year, depending on daylight saving. You can check out the start times and info via the Copper Coast Visitor Information website. There is also different themes for the light show throughout the year, so even if you have been once, make sure you go back again on your next trip for the latest show. Mostly the themes centre around the history, attractions and events in the area. You can tune your car radio to the station as shown on the silo to get the full soundtrack as well - just like at the drive ins! Make sure you get there a bit early for the countdown to enjoy the stunning sunsets that Wallaroo is famous for!

  • Allow us to put a spotlight on one of the most welcoming and flavoursome brunch cafe's that we have ever experienced in Adelaide. You are going to love this one and so are the kids! Lets unpack it - there's a lot. Half Cup Café is more than just a café, it's soul food. A social and environmental enterprise committed to making a positive impact. The team here are dedicated to serving up fresh, delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options while supporting social causes both locally and abroad. They also occasionally run some pretty cool workshops (barista training any one?) and have the most beautiful, sustainable homewares and giftware's in the adjoining business, Living Jute. Located on leafy Sir Donald Bradman Drive at Cowandilla, actually lets just hold up right there and throw in early: No Adelaide Airport drop off or pick up will ever be more impressive than one where you stop for a 'hole in the wall coffee' on your way in or out of Adelaide. Or you know, 'wow' the pants off your next visitors with the full quality experience and stop for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Ok..... let's continue. Screenshot The coffee is exceptional and you'd…
