Macchinetta Coffee House, Henley Beach

Family Friendly Eats

Hey there, fellow coffee-loving parents and families on the hunt for a delightful spot to unwind and share some good food with your little ones! We’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem that we’re absolutely thrilled to share with you – Macchinetta Coffee House. Nestled in an unassuming little cluster of shops on Grange Rd at Henley Beach, this place is a true find. If we don’t spill the beans (pun intended), you might never discover this trendy, high-quality haven for families.

Walking into Macchinetta, you’ll be greeted by an airy, leafy space that’s bright and charming by the light of day with a food menu that is genuinely superb. It’s perfect for families with space for both prams and highchairs. The ideal pitstop if you’re heading to the beach for a stroll, or simply looking for a cosy coffee date with friends and your favourite little companions.

Macchinetta opened its doors in early 2020 and has been serving up a mouthwatering array of options for breakfast, brunch, and lunch seven days a week. Their high quality food is accompanied by some of the best coffee in Adelaide, or if you prefer, a glass of wine. Owners Teresa and Joe have truly mastered the art of impressing not only adults but going the extra mile to ensure our little ones have a blast too. A hit with our daughter was the kids’ grazing platter. The platter generally features ham, cheese, pretzels, marshmallows, and, most importantly, fairy bread (and yes, adults can totally order this too!). The fruit selection changes slightly with the seasons, but you’ll always have the choice of cold milk or a babyccino, plus a juice. We loved that it’s reasonably priced too, and would much rather our kids eat this than nuggets and chips (again!). Seriously, this was one of the cutest little kids plates I’ve seen and Miss 4 obviously agreed judging by the smile and the fact that she devoured it!

The coffee selection is nothing short of impressive and rest assured, alternative milk options are available to suit dietary requirements. For those who are feeling extra sweet, the glass display cabinet offers mouth-watering pastries and delicious cakes to satisfy every taste. World-class coffee is made all the better when paired with a delectable brunch. The menu at Macchinetta is fairly broad and is all made fresh to offer. Spoilt for choice but a sucker for a little fiery twist, we opted for Chilli Scrambled Eggs. Cooked to perfection and presented beautifully, we weren’t disappointed. For something healthy, try the Granola Bowl – seasonal fruit, yoghurt, coconut, honey and passionfruit – yum! A great amount of thought has been given to the sourcing of local produce, from fresh fruit and veg or meat and seafood and that always makes us happy!

Parking was super easy, tables were well spaced out and every thing about this little place screams “Book a visit with the bestie or plan a lazy family weekend breakfast ASAP.” Better yet, drop the older kids off at school and meet the other mums for a cup of coffee or two.

On the run, grab a takeaway – you’ll thank us later!

  • Find it at: Walter Young Ave, Urrbrae Urrbrae House is an amazing precinct for families to explore- including a museum! It is located on the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide on land bequeathed by Peter Waite to the University in 1992. The land is used for agricultural research and teaching, as well as an area for public recreation. The precinct consists of an accredited museum, huge gardens, the Coach House and the Waite Historic Precinct. There's many areas to explore and so much interesting flora to investigate. Check out the Rose Garden, Sensory Garden, Garden of Discovery and the Labyrinth. With so much to explore and discover, Urrbrae House is a winner. The gardens have plenty of parking but can include a bit of walking so wear comfortable clothing and footwear so you can explore all areas. Bare in mind that disabled access is limited in some areas, particularly Urrbrae House (due to stairs), but there are paths to allow wheelchair access for the majority of the park. • Do your kids love pizza? Do your kids love mac n cheese? If you answered yes to both......don't make them choose! We've found a place where you can get both......together......on the same plate! That's right.......mac n cheese deep crust pizza at Remy's - Deep Dish Pizza & Bar is a thing.....and it's a DELICIOUS crowd pleaser of a thing. If your kids are cheese obsessed like mine this is definitely going to be a winner! Plus the cocktails… YUM! Their menu is chock-a-block full of deep dish pizza goodness. If Mac n Cheese ain't your thing they've also got a bunch of other just as mouth watering pizza toppings including snag n shrooms, triple cheeseburger and the fire breather as well as never fail faves like The Basic B (just cheese) and BBQ chicken. There's vegan options and they also have fries, garlic bread and fried mozarella if you need something on the side. It comes with a disclaimer that the pizzas take 30-40 minutes to cook, but when we went there was super speedy service, which is always great when you have kids in tow. There's isn't heaps of room for prams, so just bear this in mind when…

  • If the last time you've seen a general store was in a movie, it's definitely time to pack your bags for a road trip. Location - Port Hughes. First Stop - the General Store! Holidaying *anywhere* on Yorke Peninsula? You need to look this magical little place up and visit, it's that good, worth the drive and you will undoubtedly make some family memories here. A general store has historically been the bread and butter of small-town life across most of country Australia. A stop where you could find pretty much whatever you needed all in one place! Local communities and surrounding rural areas relied on these shops for groceries, fuel, mail, a bag of mixed lollies or an ice cream for lucky kids and maybe fishing bait + tackle in beachside locations like this one. They were used as gathering places where neighbours could exchange news, gossip and check in on each other. These days - other than inflation and a decent glow up, not much has changed. Here at PH Gen, or The Genny, as it is affectionately known on the Copper Coast, both locals and travellers can soak in the atmosphere and charm of this small-town gem where community and…
