There is no better feeling than flinging your wardrobe open and seeing a clutter free zone.
The beautifully organised shoes, perfectly folded clothes in the shelves, the neatly hung fashion coordinated and categorised…O.M.G I’m having a coronary due to excitement just thinking about it. Weird maybe but as a Personal Stylist and Professional Wardrobe Organiser, this is my job and freaking love every second of it!
If you think it’s time to get organised and reduce the wardrobe rage then have a read of my 6 tips to declutter your wardrobe like a pro.
What to keep when decluttering:
- The items you can actually wear.
If it has lost a button or needs repair, give yourself a week to get it fixed. If you don’t have it done by then, wave it goodbye. You’re clearly not going to get it done.
Same goes for those items you have to iron or need to fuss around with. They’re an ultimate turn off especially when you don’t have the time. Consider donating these to a local charity store. Just because you don’t have time for it doesn’t mean someone else won’t.
- The things that make you feel good
Why wear something that makes you feel rubbish?
It’s crazy to me how so many people get dressed in the morning and throw on items that make them feel mediocre. In addition, most wear clothing that fails to compliment their body shape, features and skin colour.
Fashion doesn’t have to be big and baggy to be comfortable and sometimes black just isn’t flattering. This is where a stylist can really help you.
Consider it a styling session as a lifetime investment of great information. You will be able to see your body and clothing options in a different light which will lead you to making better choices and purchases in the future. Some styling sessions can start from as little as $80/hour so why wouldn’t you?
- Only keep what fits
You know those big baggy items I just mentioned? Keep two if you must for your lounging days but if they double, triple or even quadruple your size, why would you do that?
It’s so important to dress for your body shape now.
If you have lost weight then get rid of the old reminders and donate them to charity.
If you have a stash of clothes that are too small, let them go baby! Yes you might fit back into it one day but why have that hanging over your head.
Why feel crap every time you try on those slim jeans and you can’t even get it over your thighs! Stop thinking skinny and start thinking healthy and love yourself in the current moment.
What to remove, donate or sell from your wardrobe:
- Worn out, old daggy items
These guys have no place in your wardrobe. If you must keep them in case you decided to start gardening in the next 5 years or have a once in a life time paint job, choose no more than 3 pieces and then give them a place in draw or storage box. You don’t need to look at this stuff everyday.
- Don’t keep it just because you splurged!
If you spent good dosh on a designer piece but never wear it, make some cash back and sell it or put it on consignment at a Vintage store. You may as well try to recover some funds rather than dust particles!
- Items that are never worn
We’re all guilty! Think about why you never wear them. Yes, even the ones with the tags on them. Is it because you don’t know how to wear it?
Why not consider a personal stylist to come to your home and help you to create outfits, sort the rubbish from the gems and ensure you have a practical, cohesive wardrobe that works to your style personality and lifestyle.
