Barristers Block is officially my favourite winery to go with kids. I’ve been to a number of recommended wineries from the Barossa to McLaren Vale and this has gone straight to the top of the list! Situated in Woodside in the Adelaide Hills, I recently took my English relatives to Barristers Block for lunch during a day in the hills and it didn’t miss a beat.

Barristers Block is a lovely winery on the main street in Woodside, just out of the main shopping area. With a huge amount of grassy lawn in different areas, I love that there is plenty of space for everyone – people with no kids can enjoy their adult day out, while those with families can make the most of their visit without worrying about annoying others. Families would do well to setup at a table out the side, next to the HUGE sandpit packed full of trucks, spades and buckets. The lawn area here has some natural shade and is also able to accommodate picnic rugs for babies, plus the owners have plenty of rustic country style tables and chairs out here too. Right next to the giant sandpit (that used to be a beach volleyball court!) is a zoo… well pretty much! A large, well fenced section of the block is home to a gorgeous herd of deer, a few alpacas, clucky chickens and a number of (sometimes vocal) geese. The farmyard area isn’t open for entry or patting, but with so many animals it was a source of constant entertainment for our young kids.

If visiting Barristers Block with a group or on the weekend I’d definitely recommend booking a table out near the sandpit so you don’t miss out – the pizzas are amazing so you’d be super sad if you did! We had range of pizza to share on the day – greek lamb, vegetarian supreme and truffle beef were all delicious. The share platters also look amazing so I’d definitely try those out next time as well.

If all the excitement of the lunch, sandpit and animals made you forget, Barristers Block is also a great winery! So adults get inside their great cellar door and (responsibly) taste their great range of wines on site. Our faves on the warm autumn day were the Sparkling ‘Legally Blonde’, the Gewurztraminer and the Charlize Rose.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss taking the kids to Melba’s Chocolate Factory just down the road!

Barristers Block is located at 141 Onkaparinga Valley Road, Woodside
Their cellar door is open 7 days, 10am – 5pm, call to book on 08 8389 7706

  • Lets just be straight up here. Climbing Mt Lofty isn't fun. It may have been sort of fun when you were 20, but now that you are old enough to injure yourself if you sneeze too hard, we need family orientated fitness that isn't going to end up with some sort of surgery. Thankfully Mt Lofty-Lite is here, so you can get the fancy insta photo at the top with only half the exercise! Brilliant! Steub Trail (named after the Cleland Conservation Park benefactor of the same name funnily enough) is a 3.8km trail which winds at a much more gentle incline from Cleland Wildlife Park right to the Mt Lofty Summit itself. We absolutely loved this trail! With a newborn baby in a pram (as well as a terrible level of fitness), the traditional waterfall gully route was not an option, so with pram in tow we took off and it was a dream. Taking a nudge over an hour to reach the summit (took is slow with very recently post c-section crew in our party), the path is nice and wide, very well made and stable and has no insane steep parts. The bends can be a little…
