Cheltenham Park Playground Toddler Fun | Kids in Adelaide
The younger kids will LOVE this ‘dress up’ where they can stand behind the plastic face, gain a mo’ and stick their arms through.

The brand new Cheltenham Park playground is now open on the corner of Cheltenham Parade and Torrens Road, Cheltenham. The playground and reserve sits in the corner of the new community of ‘St Clair’ and includes an extensive wetlands area with lots of new plantings, resident ducks are already at home and there are a number of wooden boardwalks so you can get up close to the wetlands. In addition, the cool new playground is sure to be a hit with locals and includes a number of new equipment we haven’t seen elsewhere. HOWEVER, please note that this playgroud is NOT fenced and is quite close to both a main road (Torrens Road) and an unfenced wetlands area – please take extra care, especially if going with more than one child! There are also not yet any toilet facilities onsite.

New Cheltenham Park Playground for toddlers

We do love that Cheltenham Park playground has a section for the younger kids (1-4 year olds) and another section right next to it for the older kids (5-12 years).  The toddlers area has a number of cool play items including a small spinner, spring rockers, seesaw, climbing teepee that kids can also sit inside and a climbing ‘castle’ with age appropriate slide. The toddlers area has mostly barkchips and some softfall rubber surfaces underfoot.

The older kids area has an awesome rope climbing net and a large, cool climbing frame. There are also a number of swings for different aged kids including a mini, enclosed one for littlies. Throw in some cute wooden drums, undercover seats, free electric BBQ, gorgeous wooden balance beams and sculptured totem poles and we are really beginning to like the whole area. With plenty of green space to run around and have a picnic in there are also a number of large trees nearby to find some shade, however the actual play equipment is not shaded at this stage. If you make your way to the very corner of the reserve where Cheltenham Parade meets Torrens Road you’ll also find the half court basketball and fully enclosed childrens play area with awesome tunnels (more pics coming soon of these!)

The main detractors from the Cheltenham Park Playground in the corner of St Clair Reserve is that the main playground area is not fully fenced and close to the road and water. Other factors are no apparent easy parking, plus no toilets and no shade make it less attractive than it would otherwise be. We have contacted the council to ask whether these items are on the ‘to do’ list and will update this review when we get more info. We do know that there is a whole new public greenspace and changerooms etc planned on the other side of the St Clair housing community where there are already some facilities (shown here), but that’s not a short walk with kids!

  • Find it at: Maldon Avenue, Mitchell Park The Maldon Ave Reserve Playground is a hidden gem! Upgraded in late 2023, we discovered this little beauty when riding along the Sturt River Linear bike path. Located between Marion and Sturt roads (or find it in a car as the Maldon Ave Reserve). It's a relatively well shaded area with play space for a good range of ages, including a slide, swings (incl birds nest swing), a few climbing options, noughts & crosses, and a lovely natural landscape. A free BBQ is available, water bubbler and a basketball ring also. Being close to the Sturt River Linear Park it makes a nice start/end point for a family bike ride - there is also a small jump close by near the river for those inclined. A great park and in a fantastic move, the upgrade included the addition of a toilet block!

  • Find it at: Montrose St, Ferryden Park Located on Montrose St at Ferryden Park, this little spot has just had $155, 000 spent on an upgrade which is now open! There is new play equipment including a rubber softfall mat, slide, bouncy buggy, trampolines and double swings. They have also installed two new park seats and a new drinking fountain!

  • Find it at: Sixth Ave, Ascot Park Just in time for school holidays we managed a sneak peek of this newly developed nature playground. The Marion council have done a great job of this space which sits adjacent to the Scouts Association. The nature based area is a fabulous spot for toddlers and young kids to run around and be creative with this awesome little sensory play area. Featuring a sand play and water play area along with natural logs and lots of little areas for the little ones to explore and get lost in their own world of imaginative play. My favourite is the slippery dip that has the rock climb mound you need to make your way to the top of  to get down the slide. ( the little ones will be exhausted from the climb) bravo I hear you all say. Also featured is a spinning top and as we were a tad excited about seeing this new awesome play area, the basket swing still needs to be hung. Appears that will be done in the next few days but we just couldn't wait to share this one with you. The area has a car park along with…
