The Stunned Mullet Henley

Family Friendly Eats

Multi award winning fish & chips by the beach? Yes please.

I doubt there is a kid in the world who wouldn’t want to eat fish and chips on the beach for tea, enjoying all of the freedom to run, yell and cartwheel while taking in the sunset over St Vincent Gulf. There is no play room, or kids meal or kids tasting flight in SA that stacks up if you ask my kids. Regardless of the season we don’t believe there is a better way to end a day, reset and wind down as a family than with a feed of fish and chips from this family biz, washed down with a big dose of fresh salty air.

We live west, so we’re lucky it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to the coast, and has been easy for us to try many take away fish and chip options over the years. The one we keep coming back to? The one that’s 200% worth driving from any corner of Adelaide for? The Stunned Mullet at Henley. You’ll find it nestled away just off of Henley Beach Road on East Terrace.

‘Sourcing local and sustainable fresh seafood has been and always will be the heart of our family business’ – says Amanda and Dino Papadopoulos. How good is that? Sold! This is not your ordinary suburban fish and chippery. Dino’s day usually starts early, filleting up to eight varieties of locally caught premium fish. Did you know that most places you’d order cooked garfish or flathead in Adelaide, it wouldn’t even be Australian, let alone South Australian?

The Stunned Mullet sure cook up a storm. Nothing is pre cooked here, you can see your fresh food on display and it’s then lightly battered (OMG the thin crispy batter here is to die for), crumbed or grilled. They also have an extensive burger and more traditional take away menu. Even our Nanna Jude approves!

Not sure what to get? Look, we are pretty boring. Standard fish and chips – can’t go wrong. On our recent visit however we added some calamari and prawns to our order and it was amazing. Trust me, I’m from a fishing family, I basically have fish scales on my stomach. Don’t tell any one. There’s also selection of ‘Little Mullet Packs’ for the kids. They can select from 4 x nuggs, 4 x fish bites or 4 x calamari rings served in their own easy to hold box, with chips and a sauce. Further to this there are loads of seafood pack type combinations for individuals, two people or full families.

Here’s our tip on how to execute the perfect, stress free, ‘Fish & Chip at the beach’ outing. Of course you can take it home to eat, but why would you when the sun sets over our coast. Look, we enjoy Henley Square too, but this is *so* much easier than that with kids in tow – parking included.

We like to take our seafood dinner 150m directly up Henley Beach Road and eat it on the esplanade or down on the beach. Call it Henley South. I say ‘esplanade’ as there is a lovely deck directly at the end of Henley Beach Road, so if you don’t like sand or the seagulls are going to have you in a flap, the deck is a perfect spot to spread your picnic rug. NB; We call it ‘the deck’ – my kids delight in saying that (a lot) with a kiwi accent.

This spot at the end of Henley Beach Road makes the perfect family beach dinner location and experience. Why? Four reasons. 1. It’s a stones throw from the multi award winning Stunned Mullet. 2. There are clean toilets. 3. You have a choice of sand free deck or beautiful accessible sandy beach – with sunset feels and 4. There is a BWS adjacent so Mum & Dad can grab a cheeky craft beer, prosecco or what ever spins your wheel.

  • A South Australian icon for more than 55 years, the Pancake Kitchen always makes me nostalgic for my childhood. It was so exciting to head to that nook of Gilbert St & be allowed to eat pancakes for dinner! I can still smell the maple syrup & remember looking at the menu wondering who on earth would eat bacon on pancakes (adult me, that's who). Does anyone else remember the jukebox out in the back room? The original Spotify! It may have changed a bit since then, but The Original Pancake Kitchen is still a hit with kids & makes the perfect family dining spot. It is also now in THREE different locations across Adelaide. The original Gilbert St restaurant has had little pancake babies (pikelets?) & is now also found in Modbury & now inside the Marion Cultural Centre. Of course, it goes without saying that the pancakes are amazing. There are so many different options to choose from including sweet & savory options in small, regular or tall stacks. If pancakes aren't your thing, you can grab something from the all-day breakfast menu or is you need some meat on your plate, Pancake Kitchens also double as a…

  • We may have just found Adelaide's most charming, family friendly spot to eat, that caters to both parents and kids. White Picket Coffee House, on the Eastern city fringe, serves up some brilliant kid-friendly menu options in a spacious setting with a choice of indoor tables, enclosed verandah tables, or our favourite, the rear courtyard/ garden setting complete with a sweet little cottage style cubby house! I think the fact that the rear courtyard had every table filled while we were there really shows how much of a winner this place is! The coffee here is top-notch. Each cup is brewed to perfection using quality beans, leaving you with that rich and satisfying taste we all crave. Plus, their breakfast, brunch, and lunch options are to die for! With initiatives like "Pasta Fridays", it's the perfect way to end the week. On top of that, their ready-made meals to collect for dinner or work lunches are a godsend, making busy weekdays a breeze. Parents, you'll be thrilled to know that they've got your little ones covered too. The kids' hot chocolates are made to perfection - just the right temperature to keep those tiny taste buds happy. And speaking of…
