Choosing a bike for your kids can be tough. With so many options and so many price points, plus throw in balance bikes and training wheels and sizing and it can all feel a tad overwhelming. The KiA family have kids of all ages and we were so lucky to try out some of the base bike range, an Adelaide based family business offering a range of bikes catering for the 2 year olds up to the 8 year olds.

The 16 inch option is primed for the kids moving off of the balance bikes and into their pedal bike era. Our just turned 4yo had become a bit of a whiz on his balance bike, so we decided to try moving him straight from a balance to a pedal bike with no training wheels. There is no right or wrong option here and every kid is different (and we might even end up trying training wheels if needed), but after a smooth run on the balance bike, switching to a pedal bike is the next phase.

The base bike 16 inch option comes in two colours currently, a green and an orange, and the first thing you will notice is how light it is. Low to the ground and seemingly longer than the usual bikes we have had for this age group, it just looks like a decent piece of kit. We liked how there was no foot brake, which forces the kids to get used to the hand brake option, which on these bikes is perfectly sized for tiny hands. Our little tester got the hang of the hand brakes super fast which was absolutely fantastic to see. The pedals can also be easily taken off if you want to transition it as a balance bike (we did this for a while to allow him to get used to the brakes first and to get used to the new bike size)

One thing we did love was the ease of set up. 10 minutes is all it takes to get riding straight out of the box, and no pesky fiddling with the brakes installation like on other bike brands we have fought with over the years. They grow with your child too, which for us is great as our lad at just about 100cm even is at the lower end for this one, so with adjustable seat and handlebars it will grow with him nicely for a the next few years.

Aussie owned and operated, fabulous quality and with loads of features designed for the small kids, the 16 inch option is a winner for our 4 year old.

There’s lots of helpful information on the base bikes website to help you choose the best bike for your child. To find out more and shop online (with super speedy delivery) visit basebikes.com.au

We received two base bikes free of charge for the purposes of this review however as for all reviews from Kids in Adelaide the above is honest and in our own words

The Amy Gillett Bikeway located in the picturesque Adelaide Hills is one of a number of dedicated safe cycling routes around the state to encourage family participation and a healthy active lifestyle. It currently stretches from Oakbank to Mount Torrens but stage four commenced construction in November 2024, which will take the pathway from its old end point in Mount Torrens at Oval Road, taking it through through to the intersection with Onkaparinga Valley Road in Birdwood, adding around 5.7km to the overall length of the bikeway. The majority of the extension runs through rural land away from roads, providing unique access to some of the Hills most beautiful scenery. Being built on an abandoned rail corridor it is wide, flat and smooth, and other than the occasional, safely marked road crossing, it is a completely off-road shared-use path for walking, cycling and horse-riding. If you or the kids haven’t been on a bike for a while, an out and back of 11.7km x2 is probably a bit much.…
