Mountain Bike Code of Practice

Now is also an opportune time to instill some core principles in our kids when it comes to bike riding. We like this code of practice, which really is just common sense and courtesy:

You can help maintain trails and healthy mountain biking culture by following these guidelines:

Respect the environment:

Ride only on trails marked for mountain biking or main access roads
All riders are to stay on the trails
Always enter an area through a formal entry point
Stay off muddy trails after rain
Pack out what you carry in
Don’t disturb wildlife
Keep your bike clean, don’t spread weeds
Don’t move rocks, logs or change the trail
Control your bike and stay on the trail
Don’t skid as this can cause damage
Respect Others

Respect other trail users

Expect someone may be around the next corner
Slow approach to others
Announce your presence to others
Pass with care
Ride in small groups
Control your speed
Train when the trails are not busy

Respect yourself:

Always wear a helmet and safety gear
Ride within your ability
Expect foreseeable risks
Stay hydrated
Plan your ride
Carry tools and spares
Pack a first aid kit
Take a mobile phone

  • The Bower Road Bike Park is located at the Aquatic Reserve In West Lakes Shores on the corner of Old Port Road and Bower Road.  We found it particularly good for advanced riders as we haven’t seen many other bike parks of this level in SA. If you want something to compare it against and you’re familiar with the track off Greenhill/Unley roads in the CBD then this Bower Road Bike Park is more suited to riders of the CBD’s intermediate and (often closed) advanced tracks. The location has been used as a BMX track, however over the last decade the track has not had the attention it received in years gone by. In 2013 a group of local residents school groups and the Charles Sturt Council got together to start discussing ways to improve the park and redevelop it to provide a fully functioning bike park that was as good as the facilities being developed overseas and in other parts of Australia. Through the efforts of volunteers in collaboration with the council the park currently has a kids BMX track, an advanced BMX track, Dirt Jumps and a Pump Track. Our confident 5-6 year old bike riders are comfortable…

The new 8 million dollar home of the Hallett Cove and Happy Valley BMX clubs is UCI standard and designed by former World Champion and Olympic Silver medalist Sam Willoughby himself! A second BMX track will be built alongside the Sam Willoughby International track too. The pump track will be for use by novice riders and pretty much everyone else, leaving the big track to the more experienced riders and pros. The International Track includes the main track, 5 and 8 metre hill starts, flood lights, clubrooms and parking for 108 cars. The BMX facility includes a floodlit track—the design personally endorsed by Sam - clubrooms and carparking, and become home to Cove and Happy Valley BMX Clubs. Riding this track will only be during sanctioned training and race days and will not be accessible to the general public without AusCycling membership.
