Discovery Parks – Hahndorf is surely one of the best family-friendly getaways in the Adelaide Hills, offering endless things to do for kids and parents and the perfect base for a relaxed countryside escape. Sitting right at the entry to Hahndorf and spread across an incredible 13 hectares of rolling hills and scenic bushland, this park feels wide-open, peaceful and connected to nature. There’s room to roam, room to breathe, and views in every direction that remind you why the Adelaide Hills are such a must visit destination.

From the moment we arrived, the kids were off, racing between the pump track, bouncing pillow, games room, playground, giant chess set, and what quickly became their new obsession, the excellent mini golf course. Add in a heated swimming pool with sweeping Hills views, and the fun truly doesn’t stop. During school holidays the vibe kicks up another gear, with Discovery Parks known for running kid-friendly seasonal activities like craft sessions, treasure hunts and movie nights across their network. It’s always worth checking what’s planned when you book so you don’t miss out.

Mealtimes were a breeze thanks to the huge, beautifully maintained camp kitchen. Cooking together, BBQ dinners overlooking million-dollar views, and gathering around the seasonal communal fire pit became some of our favourite moments. Holiday parks really are magic for kids, ours made friends within minutes, forming little bike gangs and jumping-pillow crews, which meant the grown-ups enjoyed each others company and some actual relaxation!

We also saw two families of little fuzzy baby ducklings, which absolutely made our day and kept the kids on the lookout for more each time we drove in and out of the park gates.

Whether you prefer a lakeside cabin, a family house or a powered campsite, there’s something here for every budget and every style of traveller. The facilities are immaculate, the setting is stunning, and with Hahndorf’s main street just moments away, plus wineries, hiking trails, wildlife parks and farm gates all nearby, it’s the ideal base for exploring the Hills. There’s even onsite conference and event facilities, making it perfect for family gatherings, work trips or group stays.

For us, the highlights were simple: the openness, the views, the ease, the laughter around the fire, and the kids enjoying so many facilities geared up just for them. Discovery Parks – Hahndorf is the kind of place families return to year after year and we can absolutely see why. Plus we didn’t even mention, no air travel, transit times, passports or lost luggage in sight! Just an easy half hour drive in the car. That’s a stress free win!

  • We’re going to skip past the introductions and go straight to the shakes. These aren’t just any shakes. They’re absolute monsters, nearly as tall as my last-born child. Instagram-worthy, show-stopping, and indulgent to the max, these signature shakes are a must-order. The Strawberry Eton Mess combines a creamy strawberry shake with white chocolate meringue and fresh strawberries, while the Strawberry Lamington pairs a vanilla shake with a house-made lamington, fresh strawberries, and cream. Pricey? Maybe. Worth every single penny? Absolutely. Snap a photo, grab a couple of straws, and share one with your bestie, your mum, your grandma or even your kids, if they let you. But Beerenberg Café is so much more than its jaw-dropping shakes. The farm has a beautiful story. A rich family history spanning six generations that has woven much of the fabric of this great region’s development. To this day, it remains 100% family owned, with all products made on-site. In the warmer months, strawberry picking at Beerenberg in Hahndorf is a bit of a South Australian rite of passage and yet somehow, we’d never stopped in at the gorgeous cafe... until now. Wow. Fresh, seasonal produce, a thoughtfully crafted menu, and flavour-packed dishes make…
