Did you know that Edithburgh on the Southern Yorke Peninsula is home to South Australia’s only tidal pool? There are talks of building one at Hallett Cove (and we’re here for it) but it’s just that at this stage, talks.
So, if you want to experience some tidal pool action how about a trip to ‘The Burgh’? It’s a two and a half hour drive from Adelaide CBD……..Unless you’re a realist and your kids are like mine needing to wee eleventy seven times, someone insists on stopping at Kiplings Bakery at Pt Wakefield, you have to drive up the look out at Ardrossan and the dog has a vom someweher near Stansbury. Allow three and a half. How fun are family road trips?
Any way this pool is ace. It’s entirely FREE and it’s great for kids in all weather conditions. The pool itself is not too deep – perhaps a meter at its deepest, until the tide comes in over the wall and then it can be a bit deeper. Older kids enjoy swimming on the outside of the wall, and at times there is a pontoon out there.
There are toilets, bbq’s, some shade and a large lawn area to enjoy. There are also a lot of concrete steps, so busy toddlers need to have eyes kept on them, as you would around water any way.
It’s a bit far for a day trip and our SOLID reccomendation is to book ahead for an apartment on the esplanade at Edithburgh Foreshore Apartments. They are excellent value, basic but modern, clean and there is room for your boat if you have one. We love this little place and it has every thing you will need. PLUS you can walk to the pool, deli, pub, ripper playground, cafe, jetty (hello squidding and best diving/snorkeling getting around) and surf shop.
Add this epic little stop to your next Yorkes getaway. We love it here and your kids will too and if you are ever here in early January Vacswim run their very affordable swiming lessons program here.
If you are like us, then the first thing you do when you arrive at a small town for a regional retreat is work out the best place for coffee and food. Edithburgh is a small little place, which is part of the charm just quietly, but they are lucky enough to have a fantastic little cafe which is just lovely. Located in the heart of Edithburgh (you can't miss it on your morning walk), you can take your pick from a large under cover area, indoor seating or even out on the grass if the weather is nice enough. Full of coastal town charm, the friendly staff will have you covered for a good quality meal at very budget friendly prices. Plenty on the menu too for the kids, so even the fussiest little eaters will be looked after. We really liked our brunch here, finding it a really relaxing environment to enjoy a good quality meal, with our little mate having a lot of room to explore after he smashed down his breakfast. Open Wednesday til Sunday, from 9am til 8pm, this will sort of become the one stop shop for your morning coffee and family meals during…

We recently did a huge 11 night trip to the Yorke Peninsula with the kids in tow - fantastic trip, but by the time we got to our second to last stop, we were running a bit low on the food we had packed when we left home and who has time for supermarket shopping on holiday? Enter, Grazing Yorkes! We got in touch with Emily and ordered a cheese platter box and a breakfast box and she delivered them direct to our accommodation so once we checked in, we could settle back with a drink and graze the afternoon away! How convenient and a little bit special too, which is what you want when you are having a weekend away right? It's such a dream, you can order these and have them delivered any where around the Copper Coast (small delivery fee may apply depending exactly where you want the boxes to show up - but Moonta, Wallaroo & Kadina are free!) The grazing box included several cheeses, crackers, dips, strawberries, cured meats and more. We loved it, the kids loved it and there was PLENTY - so much that we had enough for sunset nibbles the next night…
Wife of a FIFO miner, but don't let that define her. Mum of two jetty jumping brats aged tween and teen (who live on fresh air, saltwater and attitude). Bare feet not heels. Hats not hair styles. Beaches not bars. Food over fashion. If you can't find her she's likely 'home' on the Yorke Peninsula.
