In the warmer months, strawberry picking at Beerenberg in the Adelaide Hill’s (Hahndorf to be exact) is a bit of a South Australian right of passage. We take our interstate and overseas visitors, we take our kids, and my god is it good! However, we feel a bit cheated. We had no idea until very recently that the ‘Farm Café’ and inhouse ice creamery ‘The Dairy’ was so divine, or such an epic option for eating out with the kids. It’s not just good, it’s genuinely *really* good.

Beerenberg has a beautiful story, a rich family history that spans six generations and has woven much of the fabric of this great regions development. To this day, they are still 100% family owned, and all of their products are made onsite.

Back to the food! The Farm Café doesn’t take bookings, just roll on up from 9am to 4pm every day with the exception of Christmas. Head chef, David, was so passionate to take us (kids included) through his menu of freshly made breakfasts, lunches, brunches, cakes and more. There were a few stand outs for us all, and The Dairy obviously won the kids hearts, along with the most decadent French toast a fourteen year old had ever laid eyes on. Plus bacon. It works.

I couldn’t resist ordering the Strawberry Patch salad, full of handpicked strawberries, watermelon, cucumber ribbons, fetta and mint. Add in toasted pistachios and a drizzle of Beerenberg honey and it was a flavour explosion for my eyes and mouth.

The kids fell in love with the signature Strawberry Shortcake shake. Topped with fluffy Victorian sponge cake, strawberries, cream and fairy floss, but some how tasted like fresh fruit and wasn’t sickly like some of the crazy shakes getting around. A must have.

The coffee was on point (always needs checking) and the access for prams, wheelchairs, walking aids (bring the grandparents) were all exceptional. Also note worthy, the kids corner, with colouring.

Over all we couldn’t believe the calibre of this food and beverage offering. A lot of love, thought and creativity goes in to running this busy place, and we would hands down recommend it as an absolutely brilliant place to eat with the family.

Make sure to start or end with a trip out to pick your own strawberries if it is in picking season and a browse of the Farm Shop (buy the freeze dried chocolate coated strawberries – you will thank us).

  • Located about 10 minutes up the freeway, not far from the beautiful Mount Lofty house lie the stunning Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. Spread over 97 hectares containing accessible paths and trails for all ages and abilities these gardens are sure to be a hit with the whole family. One of our favourite trails is the lakeside trail, which is a 1 kilometre loop around the main lake that has 8 artworks each with a different theme, this one is perfect for young families. There is also loads of wildlife in the gardens including birds, butterflies, kangaroos, koalas and the Southern brown bandicoot so its perfect for the little animal lovers. There is tons to see and do with 8 different gullies to explore, each with a different theme, 4 walking trails, the stunning heritage rose garden and sculptures and artworks scattered throughout the garden. If trails aren't your thing, there is plenty of open space to let the kids run free and also plenty of spots that you can sit and take it all in (perfect for a picnic). We love that throughout the year the gardens completely change with a visit in summer being completely different to a visit…
