If you’re after a café adventure with a difference, The Hamdorf Guinea Pig Café in Hahndorf is an absolute must for families. It’s the perfect combination of kids, coffee and cuddly animals in the heart of the Adelaide Hills.
Downstairs, kids can meet the guinea pigs who live in the most incredible miniature replica of Hahndorf village lovingly built by the owner himself. It is calm, cute and interactive making it an easy win for animal-loving kids while parents get a moment to relax and enjoy the space. Visiting the mini village and meeting the guinea pigs costs $5 per person. All funds are set aside for a future lift to make the café fully accessible for everyone.
Upstairs, you will find all the café favourites with a twist. Coffee, snacks and treats are served alongside one of the funniest, pun-filled menus you will ever see. Expect plenty of guinea pig wordplay that will have the kids reading and giggling and the adults chuckling too.
Sessions are hands-on and welcoming, with staff guiding children on how to gently hold and care for the animals. It is a sweet way for kids to learn about empathy and animal care. Even better, the café gives NDIS participants meaningful opportunities to get involved in café operations, food handling, customer service and animal care, making it a space that is all about community, inclusion and heart.
It is a family-run, feel-good spot where creativity, community and cuddly guinea pigs come together for a memorable day out in Hahndorf.

Find it at: Main St, Hahndorf Hahndorf is one of the best day trip locations in our fabulous state. Seriously nothing better than a walk along Main Street, popping into the little shops for a treat or an ice cream, then washing it all down with a litre of beer from a stein and a few kilos of meat (Hahndorf Inn you have my heart....but I digress) There has always been a couple of small playgrounds in Hahndorf but the recent re-development of the Alec Johnson Park (centre of town on Main Street) has meant there is now something equally as fab for the kids to do on the trip. The new playground is fantastic. Lots of families were enjoying the spot during our visit and there was plenty of room and equipment for everyone to use and enjoy. The facilities are not too bad either, with a toilet, some shade from the lovely trees in the area and some shaded seating plus BBQs. Parking is a little dependent on when you go as Hahndorf will either be busier than the Royal Show or you will have the place to yourself. The under 10 crowd will love this the most,…
