A total Lunar Eclipse will be visible in the skies over most of Adelaide on the morning of Monday 8th September 2025. A total Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and the Moon align in such a way the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow.
For the best view, Adelaide stargazers should head outside at approximately 3.41am (maximum eclipse) and look to the northwest at around 33.4 degrees above the horizon. We know that this is not an ideal time, however if you happen to find yourself lying in your bed awake, or the kids have woken you up in the early hours of Monday morning – it is definitely worth going outside for a look.
The total duration of the eclipse is a little over 5 hours, however the Moon will be in total eclipse from 3am-4.22am. This is when the Moon will turn reddish in colour, often referred to as a ‘Blood Moon’.
If the early morning thing is not for you, The Adelaide Planetarium are featuring information about the upcoming Lunar Eclipse in their session of “What’s in the Sky this Month” on Saturday 6th September at 7.30pm. For more information and to book for this event click here.
