A total lunar eclipse – also known as a blood moon – will be visible in the skies over most of Australia on Tuesday November 8 2023, the last one until 2025. A blood moon occurs when the sun, earth and the moon align in such a way the moon passes into earth’s shadow.

For the best view, Adelaide stargazers should head outside just before 8pm and look low to the northeast at around 17.3 degrees above the horizon and the bonus is it will occur fairly early in the evening here in Adelaide so you won’t need to keep the kids up too much past bedtime for them to take a look!

The eclipse will last around five hours from the first shadow at 7:43pm until no shadow at 11:19pm

And for anyone who REALLY wants the best view, the Adelaide Planetarium have a very special FREE telescope event happening for the eclipse. Telescopes will be located on the lawn area and the University Rooftop from 7:45pm until after totality just after 10pm.
Registration is essential here

(please note rooftop is not wheelchair accessible and there are 2 flights of stairs)

Happy moongazing!
