If you’re always on the hunt for a new playground to explore with the kids, put St Andrews Reserve in Andrews Farm on your list!
Opened in September 20206, this is a pretty impressive addition to Adelaide’s northern suburbs, with a giant castle-inspired play space, plenty of room to run around and some seriously fun features for adventurous little explorers.
The $1.7 million St Andrews Reserve has been designed as a destination playground for the local community and beyond, and it’s the first Villawood playground reserve to be delivered in South Australia.
The star of the show is the castle maze playground, centred around a huge feature castle play tower.
Kids can climb, explore and make their way through the different levels and spaces, with the castle theme adding plenty of opportunity for imaginative play.
It’s the kind of playground where you can easily imagine kids turning up and immediately deciding they’re knights, princesses, explorers or the keepers of a very important castle!
The design encourages kids to get moving, take on challenges and explore at their own pace, with plenty of opportunities for children to test their physical skills and confidence through play.
Look out for the giant kookaburra!
There’s also some fabulous public art to discover around the reserve.
The playground is home to the wombat and cockatoo sculptures that previously featured at the St Andrews sales office, along with a brand-new 5-metre-tall kookaburra sculpture.
It’s a lovely touch that ties the playground into Villawood’s broader focus on public art, nature and creating interesting spaces for families to explore.
More than just a playground
While the castle playground is definitely the main attraction, St Andrews Reserve has been designed as a place for families to spend a little more time.
There’s a kick-about area for running, kicking a ball and burning off some energy, plus BBQ facilities for families who want to make a longer outing of it.
The reserve forms part of the wider St Andrews community, which has been designed around open green spaces, walking and cycling connections and family-friendly parks.
A great one for adventurous kids
We love playgrounds that encourage kids to do more than just go down a slide, and this one certainly looks like it ticks that box.
The castle and maze design gives kids plenty to investigate, while the climbing and physical challenges encourage them to build confidence, coordination and strength as they play.
And because there’s open space around the playground, younger siblings can have a run around while bigger kids tackle the castle.

Find it at: Barrow Crescent, Elizabeth Vale The newly redeveloped Barrow Crescent Reserve in Elizabeth Vale has quickly become a favourite spot for local families, offering a bright, welcoming and thoughtfully designed play space for children of all ages. What was once an unused patch of land has now been transformed into a modern neighbourhood playground, complete with a mix of traditional and nature-inspired elements that encourage both active and imaginative play. At the heart of the reserve is a multi-play structure that gives kids plenty to climb, slide and explore, providing a fun focal point for the playground. Nearby, nature-play features add texture and creativity, allowing children to interact with the environment in more hands-on ways. The accessible basket swing is another standout, ensuring that children of varying abilities can join in the fun. Surrounding the play area is a wide stretch of irrigated lawn, offering an open space ideal for running, kicking a ball or simply relaxing under the sun. Families will appreciate the new landscaped pathways, which make it easy to move around the park with prams or scooters. These smooth paths also create a simple loop for young kids learning to ride. Find it at: 185 Yorktown Road, Elizabeth Downs Barry Warren Reserve in Elizabeth Downs received an upgrade in mid 2025 and reoffers loads of fun for families, adventurers and bike-loving kids! The playground features a colourful multi-play tower complete with portholes, a large undercover slide, and a smaller slide, perfect for kids of all ages. Right next door is the much-loved pump track, which has quickly become a local favourite since its launch during the first stage of upgrades to this play space and you'll also find AFL and soccer goals, making it such a great all round spot for a play, ride, picnic and kick around. A fantastic, well thought out facility for local families, there is ample parking but no toilets sadly.

Find it at: Yorktown Road, Elizabeth Park 'Dwight Reserve', located on the corner of Yorktown and Adams Rd is a nice little spot for the locals with some cool equipment and a HEAP of space. It has a car park, shaded seating, park benches, rubbish bins and a large oval nearby (bring the footy or a kite!). It doesn't have secure fencing or toilets but is great for a quick play after school or a picnic on the weekend. I do love the multi-ring basketball bucket...sort of reminds me of Greenhills at Victor Harbor and beating my brother when we were kids! So make sure you pack the car with ALL of the balls, kites and frizbees. There is also a fabulous pump track which is more than suitable for the little kids and those who are still finding their feet (or wheels!), so make sure you pack the bikes.
