The Dutch Pantry, Klemzig

Family Friendly Eats

Have you ever craved a taste of Holland but couldn’t quite make the trip to Amsterdam? Well, you’re in luck because The Dutch Pantry in Klemzig is here to satisfy all your Dutch food fantasies!

With its eye-catching traditional Dutch-inspired signage, The Dutch Pantry proudly stands out, inviting you to explore its rich heritage and delicious offerings. Angela Leaney, raised in Australia by Dutch-speaking parents, has always cherished her heritage. After her mother passed away, she felt a strong desire to preserve her family’s stories and recipes. This passion inspired her to open The Dutch Pantry, a family-run business that brings the authentic flavours of the Netherlands to Adelaide.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a friendly yet professional team that makes you feel right at home. Photographers, influencers, and anyone who loves a good backdrop will appreciate the beautiful decor throughout this charming cafe. With plenty of seating (it can get quite busy!), a stunning wall mural of the famous Nyhavn Canal, and all things Dutch, we fell in love with the cosy ‘hygge‘ atmosphere almost as much as we loved the poffertjes – more on those in a bit.

The Dutch Pantry boasts an impressive selection of Dutch cakes, all freshly made on-site. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’re in for a treat! From irresistible Biscoff Slice to the yummy Tompoucen (aka Dutch Vanilla Slice), choosing just one is like picking a favourite child! And let’s not forget the poffertjes – those mini-pancakes from Amsterdam that my five year old keeps talking about. These little clouds of deliciousness are impossible to resist, whether you top them with a sprinkle of sugar, fruit, or gooey chocolate sauce. You’ll be begging for seconds! And while the coffee is great, do yourself a favour and order a Speculaas Shake – made from a ginger and cinnamon spiced biscuit, blended with ice-cream and topped with whipped cream. It’s as good as it sounds!

If you’re in the mood for something savoury, start with kroketten or bitterballen – deep-fried rolls of mashed potatoes and minced meat that are absolutely delicious. These finger foods are the perfect way to kick off your meal and satisfy your hunger. We decided on The Netherlands Feast platter to explore some new dishes, and it turned out to be excellent value for us.

For families, there’s highchairs available, plus a baby change table. There’s also a Dutch shop at the back of the cafe that offers authentic Dutch products, from cheese to rookworst, kroketten, and more. We idled away a good ten minutes browsing the shelves and adding stuff to our basket, even if we had no idea what exactly it was. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, The Dutch Pantry is a delightful spot you don’t want to miss!

P.S There’s an egg shop next door. Name something better than fresh eggs?!

The Kids in Adelaide team are partial to a milkshake and we have dropped a list of our favourite Adelaide (and beyond) rich, frothy, cold, flavoured dairy milk delights. From the humble traditional milkshake at Cheffy Chelbys in the south, to the best of the Barossa. We found thickshake heaven in the south and fancy schmanc-ey milkshakes in the North.
