We recently visited Gawler River Brewing and it’s safe to say this one’s gone straight onto our list of favourite family-friendly spots.
Just outside of Angle Vale, it’s close enough to be an easy-ish drive but still far enough to feel like you’ve escaped the suburbs for the afternoon. The vibe is relaxed, welcoming, and clearly loved by locals – despite the winter chill, the place was packed, which says a lot about how good it is. What really sets it apart for families is the enormous grassy area where you’ll often find a dozen or more kids kicking the footy, running around and making the most of the wide open space. There’s also a beautifully landscaped garden with little paths and a creek to explore, which our kids loved. It’s a space where they can play nearby while parents enjoy a drink and keep a close eye on things – we’ll cheers to that!

Even on a cold winter afternoon, it was comfortable thanks to the open fire and outdoor heaters scattered around the long tables on the patio. There’s also a lovely decked area with tables and umbrellas overlooking a little waterhole, perfect for a chilled arvo catch-up. GRB is also a great option for functions and events, easily hosting large groups at any given time. We even spotted a heart-shaped arch, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this place doubles as a wedding or engagement venue. You can really tell how much thought and love has gone into the setup – it’s warm, welcoming, and beautifully done.
Food-wise, the kids’ menu is super simple with nuggets and chips, but the build-your-own pizzas were a hit across the board. They’re tasty, well-priced, and great for both kids and adults who want something easy but satisfying. They’re also adding a 6-inch pizza just for kids soon, which is a great addition for those who like to have their own (and not share yours!). If you’re after something lighter or perfect for sharing, the grazing board is a great choice. It comes with a selection of dips, crackers, cheeses, antipasto items, and fresh fruit, ideal if you’re just in the mood to pick. There are also smaller snack-style dishes like bowls of chips, wedges, and arancini balls. On Friday nights, you’ll often find rotating specials including mini cob loaves, kransky rolls, baked potatoes, and loaded hotdogs, so there’s always something new to try.
If you’re into craft beer, you’re in for a treat with a great range on tap. While they don’t offer tasting paddles, the team is more than happy to let you try a beer or two before you commit to a pint. Worth noting too, the beer is some of the most affordable we’ve come across, with all pints just $11. There’s also a great value stamp card available. Pay $90 upfront for 10 beers and you’ll go into a monthly prize draw, which is a fun little bonus for regulars. If beer’s not your thing, there’s still plenty to enjoy. They offer a heap of seltzer flavours, made by adding Billson’s flavouring to an alcoholic soda base. You’ll find options like creaming soda, fruit tingle, grape bubblegum, passionfruit and more, alongside a solid selection of wines and spirits too. For the designated drivers or anyone skipping the booze, there’s coffee, milkshakes, and the usual suspects like soft drinks and juice.
Parents will be happy to know there’s loads of room for prams, high chairs on hand, a baby change table, and it’s super dog friendly so yep, the whole family is welcome (fur babies included). Our kids genuinely love coming here. Maybe it’s the freedom to explore, the fun of making new little mates, or maybe it’s the cookie bribes we shamelessly dish out before heading home (no judgment). Whatever the magic combo is, it works. Gawler River Brewing nails that rare mix of quality craft beer and a laid-back, family-friendly vibe where both kids and grown-ups can actually enjoy themselves.
Safe to say – we’ll be back. Probably more than once.
