The Adelaide Fringe is such a brilliant family event for kids of all ages – there are shows for babies and little kids right through to tweens and teenagers that will leave the whole family wanting more. Because of the casual nature of most Adelaide Fringe shows, taking your kids to a performance is a great way to introduce them to the arts and start teaching them about theatre etiquette. The whole family might learn some new dance moves, a circus trick, a new song or even learn a valuable life lesson.

Most of the family friendly shows happen over the weekends of the Adelaide Fringe so have a look at our picks below or jump onto the Children section of the Adelaide Fringe website and start booking! Will you see a much loved children’s ballet? A classic kids performer you remember from your own childhood? (We’re looking at you Peter Coombe!) You Are A Doughnut

From the creators of “The Alphabet of Awesome Science” comes a brand-new multi-award-winning family show…

You Are A Doughnut!

It’s true! YOU are a great big fleshy lump with a remarkable hole running all the way through your middle — your digestive system.

Join biology teachers Oesoph A. Gus and Dewey Dean as they embark upon an utterly brilliant all-singing, all-dancing (and all-clowning!) exploration of every twisting tube and remarkable organ — with sketches, songs, and sensational science. Along the way you’ll encounter a frenzy of enzyme-powered ping pong balls, sing along with a rainbow collection of poop puppets, and witness the weirdest poetry performance you’ve ever seen.

“You Are a Doughnut” is a ‘riot of fun’ (The Clothesline) and a ‘sure winner for the whole family’ (Glam Adelaide)

It’s a little bit gross — and a ‘hole’ lotta fun! (You might even learn something…).

“You Are A Doughnut has been a longtime Fringe favourite in the Kids In Adelaide team, so I was excited to check it out myself, finally! It’s high energy, funny, entertaining, even educational and did not disappoint.

Two teachers have been booked for a relief biology lesson – oh no! They decide to teach the lesson about the digestive system together, but soon discover they have VERY different teaching styles. (We believe the correct term these days is “pedagogies.”)

We were taken through a series of songs, games shows, and cooking demonstrations to learn how the digestive system works. This show is super fun and if your kids love hearing about farts, toilets, poo, bums and vomit – this is 100% the show for them!

The team from That Science Gang had our kids giggling, doing actions and calling out answers throughout the show – it was super engaging and interactive enough without the pain of seeing anyone’s precocious kids pulled up on stage (usually ours).

Plus, we all learnt something! This show is suited to anyone aged 2 up who wants a good laugh, a bit of a boogie, some toilet humour and a refresh in biology!”

Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience

The international smash-hit, Faulty Towers The Dining Experience is returning to Adelaide from 16 February to 10 March at the Terrace Hotel Adelaide as part of the Adelaide Fringe. Come and see for yourself why this is labelled “Immersive theatre at its startling best” (Best of Theatre, London 2019)

Having recently chalked up 10 years on London’s West End, 15 years touring the UK and Europe, and 25 years touring Australia, this production is the longest running Fawlty Towers production of any kind worldwide.

When the audience become diners in the ‘Faulty Towers’ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen – because 70% of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a 2-hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a ‘70s-style 3-course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem. Expect the unexpected!

‘A full-on feast for the funny bone’ Australian Stage
‘Hilarious’ ★★★★★ The West Australian
‘Seriously funny. An absolute blast’ ★★★★★ The Advertiser

Kids In Adelaide Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you ever enjoyed the show Fawlty Towers, run don’t walk to book seats at this incredible calibre dinner show.
Set in the light and leafy Botanical Room at The Terrace Hotel (on South Terrace) parking is ample and you’ll avoid all of the East End hustle PLUS enjoy a really lovely three course meal.
The cast played their parts to an absolute tee….. it was exactly like the show and the entire sold out room were transported to Fawlty Towers in Devon, England and I can tell you the 130ish guests in our dinner session roared with laughter from start to end.

While the content of this show would be fine for kids / families, it’s a couple of hours at a dinner table and we think this one is best for your date night or take your Basil loving parents!
Our tip, arrive half an hour early and buy a drink at the bar lounge prior to doors opening. (The show actually starts out there to welcome and seat you.) We opted for a bottle of wine to take in with us, as there is no real ‘break’ in the first hour and you do need to go out of the room to the bar for beverage service.
The meal (included with your ticket price) was delightful and dietary requirements can be catered for. If you are wanting to sit with friends in the same session and haven’t booked tickets together, you can also request that prior your show day.
This was such a high quality experience.
Manuel (Adrian Espulso) was an absolute crack up (and happens to be lowkey hot). Basil (Cameron Hurry) delivered 110% energy, he didn’t stop, and thank goodness for Sybil (Gemma Galley), keeping them all in line and having epic hair.

If you like Fawlty Towers – see the show, it won’t disappoint, it was SO true to the show and we give it five solid stars.

The seven colours of the rainbow, the seven notes of music along with Imogen and six star children from the audience help Starman Sam find his way home and in doing so, they discover parts of themselves they never knew existed.

“Onto the actors and every single performer committed 100% to their role and delivered with gusto. From the sweet singing voice of Dorothy, to the tapping talents of the Tinman, the pure sass of the Wicked Witch, right through to each ensemble member, every cast member up onstage was well rehearsed with evident solid training behind them.

Our kids were enthralled the entire time – they bounced along in their seats to the songs, loved watching the characters come out into the audience and cheered when (Ding Dong!) the Wicked Witch was DEAD!

Another fabulous offering from Theatre Bugs and the Adelaide Theatre Academy.”

Here’s a new way to experience the Adelaide Fringe this year. If you live in Regional S.A, it’s too far or too hard to get to a Fringe venue or you just want to try something different, this at home Fringe experience is for you.
A package will arrive in your letterbox that houses your at home Fringe experience! Simply ensure you have a phone/internet, scissors, tape and a pen. Think virtual escape room, but a mystery to solved instead. There’s ghosts everywhere and we join Squishy Taylor and her friends and family in helping solve the mystery.
Use either QR codes, or simply go old school and read the text from the book to work through a range of puzzles and interactive clues to figure why these ghosts are all across town. This one is for adults and kids to do together – we love that it opens communication channels, encourages problem solving and promotes time as a family!
Would recommend kids aged 7-10 approximately with their favourite adult. It would be great even for grandparents with some enthusiastic grand kids! Just a heads up, it does take a little time, so be sure to pick a time where kids are willing and able to focus and remain engaged for about 1 hour.

This captivating family-friendly show left us utterly mesmerized! The highly skilled performers showcased their incredible abilities, keeping us on the edge of our seats throughout.
The show’s diversity and creativity, blending acrobatics, dance, music, lighting, and visual effects, left a lasting impression, this is one of those Fringe shows you’ll want to see more than once
While the dramatic music, strobe lights, and masked performers might be more suitable for children over 5, the entire experience was a thrilling combination of entertainment elements.
Our favourite part? Too hard to pick just one, but the trapeze and balancing chair act was particularly impressive.
The show received a unanimous 5 star review from our whole family. Grandma, enthusiastic about the entire performance, even suggested giving it a generous 5 and a half stars, emphasizing this show being one of the top picks for the whole family this year.

Kids in Adelaide Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a wonderfully wacky and marvelously magic Fringe show suitable for the whole family.  Josh is genuinely hilarious and this show is interactive and entertaining for every minute of the full hour. You know when your kids laugh so hard it makes you laugh…..this show is that.  This is a really interative show with lots of audience participation, a magic gift for every child which is part of the show and lots of kids invited up on stage. So our one tip, don’t be a “chicken” and make sure you volunteer to be a magicians helper, it’s such a Fringe highlight for kids. A must see show for kids this Adelaide Fringe but be quick, it’s almost sold out!

Signor Baffo

Interactive Theatre International (ITI) is proud to present the Australian Premiere of Signor Baffo at Adelaide Fringe Festival from 17th February to 17th March 2024.
Having toured the UK since 2013, this gorgeous interactive children’s comedy is making its Australian debut, lauded by kids everywhere: it’ll ‘blow your head off’ (Kai, aged 7). An interactive treat for children 3+ and their families.

There’s chaos in the kitchen when Signor Baffo’s left in charge! All the answers to all the most important questions of the day are revealed in the charming culinary chaos of Signor Baffo’s kitchen: What’s the best way to mix meatballs with spaghetti? How do you make a chicken lay an egg? And how exactly does a sausage roll? In this supremely silly interactive children’s show, expect generous helpings of fun, mischief and adventure.

“A clever script, simple plot and superb clowning and slapstick ensure a young audience is enthralled” (Remote Goat)

Kids In Adelaide Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

You won’t find a funnier or more well produced show for your 3-8 year old than this 50 minutes. It’s a one man gig and our kids were fully invested in the tumultuous story of Signor Baffo fumbling his way through a check list to open his boss’s restaurant (with a lot of help from the audience) despite his evident lack of culinary skills.  You’ll laugh, clap, participate and laugh some more. Little seamless ‘pops’ of magic kept the kids even further engaged. The venue was cool on a hot day, and was only a short walk into Gluttony (perfect for little legs). Get to this one!

The Dark Room For Kids

You and your family are stuck inside a live-action videogame! How will you escape?! Will you: A) Find light switch? B) Go north? C) Explode in a shower of stinking guts?

An interactive adventure featuring terrible prizes and total mayhem! This bit is for parents only: this show is recommended for 11+ but younger kids are welcome. There may be some mild language but it’s more like Roald Dahl than YouTube.

Kids in Adelaide Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The family-friendly show, recommended for children aged 11-14, unexpectedly entertained even younger kids who found joy in the humor. There were quite a few younger ones at our show and they all seemed to really enjoy it. The catchphrase, ‘you die, you die, you die,’ added a playful element with everyone soon joining in the chant. Take note there is some mild language. While adults appreciated jokes that flew over the kids’ heads, the interactive nature of the show, with audience participation and voting, engaged everyone. The energetic presenter showcased quick wit and connected well with the audience, making the experience enjoyable for all. Despite the challenges of a hot 32-degree day, the presence of fans inside the venue contributed to a more comfortable atmosphere. The host’s commitment to the show was evident, even enduring the heat in leather attire. Overall a fun show to see this Fringe.

Tahir – The World’s Best Worst Magician

Tahir is one of Australia’s most decorated comedians, what he isn’t known for (yet!) is his amazing ability to perform absolutely terrible magic tricks. Luckily(?), this will soon be rectified, because at this year’s Fringe Festival, Tahir combines killer jokes and woeful tricks – with hilarious results.

We’ve all seen good magicians who are pretty ordinary comedians. Well, now it’s time to see an award-winning comedian who is a VERY ordinary magician!

Warning: There might even be a good trick or two!

Kids in Adelaide Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tahir, known as “The World’s Best Worst Magician,” delivers a captivating and entertaining performance that delights audiences of all ages. Nestled in the cosy confines of The Factory at The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Tahir’s show is a testament to his years of experience in stand-up comedy and acting, now brilliantly fused with his talent for magic. His witty style and infectious energy make him a funny guy who can pull off some pretty awesome tricks, keeping the crowd impressed for the entire 70-minute production.

From the moment Tahir steps onto the stage, his infectious energy grabs hold of the audience’s attention. He dives headfirst into a whirlwind of 10 magic tricks in just a few minutes, unleashing a cascade of comic chaos that leaves everyone (including our 6 & 4 year old) giggling for more. While his tricks may not be the most elaborate, what truly sets him apart is his laid-back demeanour, sharp sense of humour, and uncanny knack for connecting with the crowd. Despite the playful jab at his magical prowess in the show’s title, Tahir’s performance exceeds all expectations. He had us all eating out of the palm of his hands.

It’s magic meets mayhem in the most delightful way possible!

Kids In Adelaide Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ten Thousand Hours is a simply stunning piece of work by GOM Circus, delving into the work, time and dedication it takes to master a skill. We were truly mesmerised throughout the whole experience.
This is not a clowning, juggling, pie in the face kind of circus work. Ten Thousand Hours is athletes at work, taking on acrobatic feats that we had never seen before using a perfect blend of strength, team work and pure joy. Honestly, it was obvious how much the artists were enjoying themselves. They tumbled, they climbed, they balanced, they jumped and I wish I could paint a picture that depicts how clever, stunning and amazing their skills are. The GOM Circus artists were in perfect sync with each other and while our hearts were in our throats for the first few minutes, you soon realise that these are pros at work and relax into true appreciation for the performance.
Did it all go perfectly, every single time? Nope, but that is the whole point of the show. Mastering a skill such as acrobatics means doing the same thing over and over again, messing up, trying it differently and sometimes having something go wrong even when you think you have it right. We especially loved their clever take on the ‘water bottle challenge’ which perfectly proves this point.
What ages is Ten Thousand Hours suitable for? We took our 8 year old who loves her own acro classes so she was mesmerised the entire time. As long as your kids can sit still and concentrate for an hour, they should be fine.
I would give this 10 stars if I could. An absolutely mind blowing show from this home grown Adelaide company.

The Family Friendly Stand Up Show

British comic sensation and international freestyle RAP king Chris Turner is making his much-anticipated return to Adelaide Fringe stages with The Family-Friendly Stand-Up Show.

The award-winning US based comedian who was the first comic to ever perform a Las Vegas residency with Cirque Du Soleil and receive a standing ovation on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert will deliver an hour of stand-up suitable for all ages. He’s brought along his catchiest songs, best dance moves, and funniest friends to help out. With 10 sell-out years at the Edinburgh Fringe under his belt, Chris’ silly raps and stupid jokes will have the whole family cracking up.

As one of the world’s biggest improv comedy stars, this show will mark Chris’s first South Australian performances in eight years and is a rare opportunity to see the global comedy star at the top of his game. Chris is understandably excited to be getting back to Adelaide for Adelaide Fringe 2024.

“I love the vibe of the Adelaide festival season and I remember the energy of the audiences fondly. I can’t wait to bring the laughs for the premiere of this special show that I’ve been working on especially for the good people of Adelaide”, Chris says.

The Family-Friendly Stand-Up Show will be performed at The Kingfisher in Gluttony from 9-17 March.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
An hour of stand up comedy for the whole family, all ages. Chris the comedian takes his inspiration from the audience at the time. The kids enjoyed the freestyle rapping and were amazed at how he was able to rap with any given topic! Just incredible how he is able to think so fast on the spot! Classic gags and good old fashioned comedy without smut and bad language. Very refreshing and hilarious at the same time.
Suitable for all ages. We loved this show.

AFRIQUE EN CIRQUE

New to Adelaide Fringe: The incredible Afrique en Cirque is a show by Yamoussa Bangoura, inspired by daily life in Guinea. This performance shares the beauty, youth and artistry of African culture through a colourful show that will make any space vibrate with energy. It represents strength, agility and life’s joys of young Africans. The audience will see acrobats execute gravity defying moves and human pyramids, all to the contemporary sounds of Afro-Jazz, percussion, and Kora.

Yamoussa Bangoura is a multidisciplinary artist of Guinean origin, who created the company Kalabanté Productions in 2007. Yamoussa always had a dream of founding a circus school and having his own company in African arts. As a young man, he studied the circus performers he saw on European TV and practised on the beach by his home. Eventually he joined Circus Baobab, Guinea’s original circus, and in the early 2000s he was recruited to perform in Canada.

Living in Montreal for several years, the hub of circus in Canada, Yamoussa began to develop his own shows, which over the past several years have been increasingly gathering attention and recognition in the worldwide circus arts community. Don’t miss this amazing production, Afrique en Cirque, as it makes its South Australian premiere at Gluttony this Adelaide Fringe! Its run is limited to the first ten days of the festival only.

Justin’s Big Balloon Show was truly incredible. Rated “1 hundred and 59 trillion” thumbs up from my 5 year old son. The show included dangerous, clever, funny, jaw-dropping, and heart-felt acts.
Justin showed us just how creative balloon art can be, constantly wowing the audience with his creations. We were told the acts were going to be dangerous and stupid. Well, we were stupidly impressed and were left wanting more. The crowd interaction was great, Justin made us all feel like we were part of the show itself. He left us constantly questioning how the magic happened. If you’re looking for a great show to watch with your family, this is it.
The show is full of colour and laughter, it truly is a feel good show for all members of the family.

Little Red In The Hood – by A.J Bailey

A fun-filled fractured fairy tale with recycling messages!

Little Red loves her Granny and her neighbourhood!
She’s like a Superhero in a hoodie- always on the lookout for litterbugs and people who don’t know how to Recycle.
Her mottos are ‘Keep Australia Beautiful’ and ‘Be a Recycle Superhero’
Everyone thinks Red is pretty amazing!
Of course, every story has a troublemaker, and this one has Walter – The Big Bad Wolf.
He’s not really that big or bad …more like medium-sized and cheeky, with no clue about Recycling!
Walter can smell the awesome chocolate cake Granny’s got cooking and he’s on a mission to get the first bite.
Oh no…watch out Granny!

Kids in Adelaide Review – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A different and really fun interpretation of the classic children’s tale, Little Red Riding Hood. The audience goes adventure with Walter the Wolf (aka The Big Bad Wolf) as he tries to get first taste of Grannie’s delicious Chocolate Cake.  Little Red, our stories recycling hero, isn’t having a bar of that though and she proceeds to save Granny, the cake and give Walter a lesson on how to not be so big and bad and to choose friendship instead.  Lots of music, dancing, laughs, lessons (and fart jokes) in this show and with EIGHT performance locations throughout S. A it’s the perfect Fringe experience for primary aged children.

We had a feeling this show would be one of our favourites for Fringe 2024 and we weren’t wrong. JUNKLANDIA is a big funky five stars from us!
If you love a kids Fringe show that’s full of big colours, big sounds, big laughs, music and crowd participation on an epic scale this one is for you. These guys had the entire audience, kids and adults alike laughing and bopping in the aisles to the sound of instruments made from recycled “junk”. Kids of all ages will love this show, with primary aged kids also taking home an important lesson about recycling and the environment.

Jeff Achtem of Bunk Puppets has done it again! His clown adventures and puppet mastery had our family of five laughing, cheering and clapping along, as he creates interactive theatre magic. An imaginative and comedic puppet show, Bunktopia shines for the young at heart.
Jeff manages to create a myriad of worlds and stories with his puppet creations, from giant trolls to silly snails, crazy scientists and so much more! If you love slapstick comedy of the ‘Mr Bean’ variety, you will love Bunktopia. For something a little different to your typical circus and magic shows, this hilariously creative show is one not to be missed on your Fringe schedule.
For that truly authentic Fringe feel, the show is held in the Garden of Unearthly Delights! We are off to bunnings to buy some cardboard and gloves to make to some crazy shadow puppets!
