A hotel in the middle of town possibly isn’t the first place you would think of for breakfast with kids, however we recently enjoyed breakfast at the Mount Gambier Hotel (or ‘The G’) while holidaying in this gorgeous Limestone Coast town and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
The G is conveniently situated right in the centre of Mount Gambier and oozes old world charm. There are multiple dining areas, all with cosy fireplaces for winter. It might not be appreciated by your kids, but take a moment to enjoy the stunning leadlight windows in the front bar and dining area – just gorgeous!
The breakfast menu is plentiful, with heaps of options for fueling your day, including muesli, waffles, a big breakfast, banana bread, breakky burger, vegetarian and vegan options and more – including a huge range of add ons (hello hash browns!).
There is even a “Little Peeps Bacon and Eggs” which was perfect for our five year old with toast, bacon and eggs prepared however you want (scrambled all the way!!).
Our meals were delicious and FILLING! The ‘Local Showcase Bacon and Egg Roll’ looks small, but I almost couldn’t finish it. Almost. It was so yummy, I couldn’t resist the last few bites.
Grab the kids a juice and yourself a coffee and you have a great meal to kickstart the day!
We also had a peek at the lunch and dinner menu and will definitely have to go back sometime to try that one out. The Mount Gambier Hotel’s ‘Little Peeps’ menu has not one, not two, not three but EIGHT different kids meal options. How great is that?! It’s a fabulous looking menu with all your pub faves, salads, pizza, pasta, burgers and even delicious sounding meats and meals from the Josper charcoal oven. Something for the whole family!
The Mount Gambier Hotel also has accommodation upstairs – while we were at breakfast there were heaps of people checking out, so we are going to take that as a sign that the rooms are great and in-demand! Perfect for if your family wants to stay in the heart of Mount Gambier.

Intrigued by the name on a recent trip to the South East (Limestone Coast), we couldn't help but divert 14 km south of Keith to check out Mount Monster Conservation Park. Turns out it's claim to fame is not really that monstrous at all, but is home to an unusual geological feature, that seems quite out of place, a big granite outcrop that can't be found any where else in SA. A short hike (more of a rock scramble - achievable with kids) to the summit rewarded us with uninterrupted views over the area and would make for a pretty cool sunset spot. For the inquisitive (not my kids on this occasion), an interpretive self-guided walk around the base of the granite outcrop will reveal some of the secrets of Mount Monster. We saw some pretty fascinating wildflowers, bird life and kangaroos in the distance. It is apparently not uncommon to come across wallabies, echidna, woodland birds, and reptiles. Our highlight was skimming rocks in an old water filled quarry. A great spot for a picnic and we highly recommend a meal or refreshment break at the Willalooka Tavern near by. (We knocked back a dozen oysters and some wood…
Insty famous Umpherston Sinkhole is located in Mt Gambier around 5 hours drive from Adelaide on the Limestone Coast. Where: Jubilee Highway E, Mt Gambier Once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards creating the perfect environment for growing. Enter James Umpherston in 1886 who turned the space into the incredibly beautiful sunken garden that it is today. Full of hanging vines, ferns, flowers and plants of all shapes, sizes and colours. It's stunning! The sinkhole is free to visit and open from dawn to dusk and, as the sun sets, the Umpherston Sinkhole comes alive with hundreds of possums as they come into this tranquil garden to feed. Bring some fresh fruit (no bread please) to feed them if you like. A long set of steps will lead you down into the sinkhole and you'll be able to stop and there's a number of spots to stop and admire the garden from different heights and angles. When you get to the bottom you'll want to save some time for a good walk around, and there's even an undercover shelter with seating and a free BBQ down…
