Parents, you know the struggle; tired, sick to death of cooking the same damn thing, just for the kids to turn their noses up every. single. night, but the thought of eating away from home also scares the bejesus outta’ you. If this sounds familiar, then I urge you to keep reading. I’m about to share with you the difference between a GREAT and a substandard restaurant and WHY eating out with kids isn’t as hard as it seems (if you know where to eat!)
I give you… the newly opened Schnithouse at Golden Grove. (click here for the Schnithouse – Hilton)
#1 – The kid-friendliness: Not all restaurants welcome young diners, but this one makes dining with kids a pleasure. The staff (or other diners) didn’t seem to mind that our kids couldn’t sit still for longer than a minute or that their forks spent more time on the floor than on the table and although they served pop tops as drinks, our kids still managed to spill them.
We were lucky enough to be seated outside at a large table overlooking the Golden Grove Shopping Centre playground which for us, was an absolute winner with three young’uns. If you’re seated inside however, the playspace which features a large climbing dome, and a boat-themed play structure is literally only a few metres away from the door. Unsurprisingly, a massive hit with the kids was the water pump, trough, and waterway. Pack a change of clothes/ shoes if your kids love a good splash!
The dining space isn’t overly large but we were glad to see they provided high chairs for their youngest customers. Nothing’s worse than trying to enjoy a meal with a baby/ toddler wriggling on your lap. The restrooms are located in the shopping centre complex, a short walk from the establishment. Here, you’ll find a parents room, equipped with feeding chairs, baby change facilities, ect.
#2 – The Menu: I’m one of those people who google the restaurant and study the menu before visiting. I like to be prepared, kinda’ know in advance what I might order. The way I see it, by weighing up my options beforehand, I don’t waste the lovely waitresses’ time salivating over the physical menu and therefore fall victim to pressure-ordering (ordering the first thing I see, because I feel the need to hurry). Word of warning… this menu is the BOMB and takes a good 5 minutes to read due to its size. It’s legit awesome with a variety of food options including schnitzels, well DUH!
Kids can take their pick from the $11.90 Little Schnitters menu which includes mini chicken schnitzel, fish and chips, penne meatballs, macaroni and cheese, and mini beef sliders. All kids meals come with a drink and a gelati cup and are excellent value.
#3 – The Food: Now obviously, we aren’t going to a Schnithouse without ordering their crowd favourite “Reef & Schnit” – a freshly crumbed schnitzel, perfectly golden and topped with succulent prawns and salt & pepper calamari. Disclaimer; it was every bit as delicious as it sounds. “The Dirty Gringo” was recommended by the manager and did not disappoint. I do love a good schnitzel, but truth be told, I’m generally a parmi girl. So I was a little intimidated by the mexican spiced ground beef, mild salsa, corn chips, avocado, and jalapenos served on top of my chicken schnitzel. I thought just maybe, there was “too much going on”, but boy was I wrong. It was the right amount of spice and the flavours were spot on! For the sweet tooths out there, I apolgise, we were too full for dessert, even though right now I’d kill for their “Salted Caramel Waffles”.
Also worth noting; we dined with a herbivore who was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the eggplant “Totally Vegged Schnitzel” was. Vegans/ Vegetarians/ Celiacs are most definitely catered for here.
Our kids chose fish and chips and mini sliders, both of which were devoured by hungry little tummies. My son has actually asked me repeatedly if we can “go back to where the little burgers are”.

#4 – The Service: Top notch staff. Friendly and efficent. If I owned a restuarant, these are the guys I’d hire, 100%! The owners (not me unfortunately) were more than happy to have a chat and you could tell they genuinely enjoyed providing an experience where families felt welcome.
Ordering food and drink is soooo much easier without having to line up (kids and lines DO NOT mix) and I for one, welcome this next gen contactless ordering system. By scanning a QR code on your phone, you can order whatever your little heart desires and it just so happened, my heart desired Gin. I blinked and it was on my table, almost like magic. Given the pandemic, this feature allows for less physical contact too.
Open from 8 am until late every day, the Schnithouse will please those out North who struggle to find a family-friendly venue to eat, let alone an all day menu that’s affordable.
I read somewhere that the main goal of a restaurant is to keep the customers coming back. Guess what Schnithouse? You succeeded! We’ll be back – with bells on!
