I think I just died and went to brunch heaven. I definitely have a new contender for best brunch on Yorke Peninsula…while staying in Moonta, we dropped into Taste The Yorke, a delightful and delicious café on the main drag in town. Run by Jo and her lovely staff, Taste The Yorke gives locals and tourists alike somewhere to support local Yorkes businesses in more ways than one.

The café consists of mainly outdoor seating around an undercover verandah, with a few tables inside. Head indoors to order and have a look at the local produce and products for sale. Jo gets in fresh bread from the famous Minlaton Bakery, plus you’ll find shelves stocked with goodies from MBC Foods, Broughton River Gourmet and plenty of other local Yorke Peninsula products.

Let’s get to the menu though! So much to choose from….the menu is mostly centered around brunch, with some lunch options such as quiche, salad and cornish pasties (if you haven’t had a cornish pasty while in Moonta, you are missing out!). The whole menu is available all day though, so you really don’t need to decide between brunch or lunch!

For the kids there is the “Little Yorkers: menu with some favourites – toasties, pancakes, waffles, eggs and toast, all which come with a fruit box or mini milkshake for only $10. You can’t go wrong!

The kiddie milkshakes come in a takeaway cup, complete with lid and straw – oh how I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that the chance of a spill had just been drastically reduced. It’s these little touches that help make a café kid-friendly and Taste Of The Yorke has nailed it.

Service was FAST. Within a few minutes of ordering our drinks had arrived – did I mention the drinks menu yet? SO MANY OPTIONS! Smoothies, milkshakes, thickshakes, juice, tea and of course COFFEE. I opted for a Blue Heaven thickshake, which I don’t think I’ve had since I was a kid myself – it tasted like my childhood and did not disappoint! The kids devoured their milkshakes and by the time they were done, our food had arrived!

It was gooooood…..hot, tasty and fresh. Check out the photo of the Big Yorkies Breakfast, our KiA Dad was in heaven! And the Little Yorkers Pancakes with ice cream and sprinkles was a great size – the whole family helped out to finish them off!

If you are someone who truly likes to support local while you are visiting a regional town, then Taste The Yorke is absolutely THE PLACE to go. If you don’t have time to sit down to eat, use their online ordering function – the Moonta Playground is just down the road so why not grab coffees and some cakes from Taste The Yorke on the way?

If you are sitting outside, you can grab blankets if it is chilly and there is chalk for the kids to write on the pavers while they wait for their food, or to give Mum & Dad a few minutes peace while eating!

  • Did you know that Splash Town at Moonta Bay Foreshore on the Yorke Peninsula is an entirely FREE waterpark for kids and families? Think waterslides, tipping bucket and a whole heap of waterplay fun. It's a fantastic community facility, open for every one to use. South Australia has some really great little water parks and water slides, however a lot of them are hidden in various tourist parks and only available for use of their customers, it can be hard to find one that everyone can use, especially with out paying. A real family holiday fave hot spot, the water park is able to be used by kids (and adults…well nobody told me off) of all ages and abilities. My youngest was a little shy at first but he was covered by the little slide in the park. The eldest kids (and me) had a ball on the 4 big slides as well as the big water bucket. With plenty of seats and grassed areas to sit and watch the kids, as well as it all being fenced off, this just makes for a superb family arvo. Once you finish at the water park you can wander the nearby beach…

  • Right across the road from the Minlaton Caravan Park and the Minlaton Playground is the HJ & Brian Cook Native Animal Reserve.  You can’t go inside, but take the kids for a walk around the perimeter to have a look at the emus, wallabies and birdlife. There are a few shady seats around the outside for you to sit and watch the animals. The emus were as curious about us as we were about them and followed us the whole way around! When we visited, there were tiny emu chicks which were just adorable! The wallabies were harder to spot but it was lovely seeing them in such a natural habitat eating and cleaning themselves or sunning themselves. For a free bit of entertainment, we think this is a great way to spend half an hour while you are on the Yorke Peninsula! Find it on Spencer Hwy, Minlaton
