Sturt’s Desert Pea is putting on an incredible show right now, with huge patches of South Australia’s floral emblem popping up across the Flinders Ranges.
We came across one of the biggest displays that’s surely existed in years, with the bright red and black iconic flowers standing out against the rugged Flinders landscape. If you’re heading up that way, this is absolutely worth the drive!
We took the Flinders Ranges Way from Hawker towards Blinman, then turned right onto the dirt road towards Arkaroola, just south of Blinman. From there, set your trip meter and travel about 27km until you reach a river bed. Turn left into the river bed and you’ll find the Sturt’s Desert Peas about 100 metres on the left.
The road is unsealed with quite a few creek crossings, although there was minimal water when we visited, and we found it suitable for all car types as you take it slow. There are smaller patches scattered around the Flinders too, so keep your eyes peeled!
We anticipate them flowering for a while yet although this depends entirely on the weather. It’s worth checking with a local before you head out, or joining a Flinders Ranges Facebook group for the latest updates.
Please remember to admire them without disturbing them. Sturt’s Desert Pea is protected in South Australia, so picking or removing the plants isn’t allowed. It’s also important not to walk through the patches or trample the flowers. Instead, find a clear path through the area or admire them from the sides and let these beauties keep growing.

The world famous Flinders Ranges just has to be on everyone’s bucket list. We did the driving, spoke to locals, drove the tracks, spotted all the wildlife, broke up all the back seat kid fights to bring you what we think is the best of the best of the Flinders.
