If ever something deserved its own day, chocolate has to be right up there. World Chocolate Day is celebrated on July 7th each year and given Adelaide has so many fantastic purveyors of the sweet cocoa treat, we took one for the team [thats you guys] and volunteered our tastebuds this World Chocolate Day to sample some South Australia’s BEST!

Geez our kids do it tough sometimes don’t they…

Some of these brands/ businesses I’m sure you’re all familiar with, but this list also has a few unrecognised names too, which are just as deserving to be here. Each chocolate that we have tried has a store/s or online stores based right here in Adelaide…. so come on, do your bit to support local this week and get on the chocolate.

Robern Menz

It wouldn’t be a South Aussie chocolate feature without Adelaide’s equal most famous round balls the FruChoc from Robern Menz. Did you know that the FruChoc was first produced in 1948 and they now produce approx 90 million a year!!!
Robern Menz is a family business spanning four generations. It is the parent company to its two famous brand ranges Robern and Menz producing not only the iconic FruChoc but also Crown Mints, JeliChocs, Choccy Snakes, Violet Crumble and Fruit & Nut Chocs. There are now three Menz FruChoc shops in Hahndorf, McLaren Vale and Glynde or you can shop online at

Great Southern Chocolates

It is hard to find the words to properly convey how delightful these treats are. If you love a chocolate covered (well…anything) snack, think nuts or apricots or even lolly snakes, then these are for you. Another fabulous local business, which has grown to now have their stock on shelves as far off as northern Queensland, you might have seen these at your local supermarkets and not realised they are from right here in Beverely!

We can’t get enough of these and they are a new staple in our snack basket for those family movie nights.

Did you know S.A’s very own Bracegirdle’s is Australia’s most awarded artisan chocolatier?

There was truly something for everyone. With a Signature Collection box that the adults craved, to the the Milk Fairy Freckles and Honeycomb block which the kids completely devoured…. we LOVED our little selection of Bracegirdle’s chocolate.
The Bush Plum Chocolate too was a thoughtful twist on Aussie foods, especially well timed with NAIDOC week – just superb. Yum!!

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company

With over 250 chocolates in their range, you will be just about guaranteed to find something that takes your fancy. We only tried about 5 different types of their choccie range, but loved them all! By those odds, we reckon we would get around their entire range and the next time we are in Tanunda, we will be making a stop at their store for an absolute chocolate experience. We just found these to be simply sensational, with the whole fam loving them.

Have a look at the photos of the purpose built choclate consumption arena, with spectacular views and to-die-for treats. To be honest after trying a sampling of these at home, we are just dying to take a drive to the Barossa and check out every thing they have to offer.

  • Donuts. Nobody hates a donut and if they do, they aren’t worth knowing anyway. Probably the most important food in our economy, shown by the fact that when referencing any country town the quality of the bakery is point number 1, and every bakery lives or dies by its donuts. Case closed. Donuts are King.

  • I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! Is there anything better than an ice cream on a hot Adelaide day? (Or any day really?!) We have collated the best spots in Adelaide & beyond to enjoy a delicious ice cream treat (tough gig, we know!).

  • Melbas Chocolate Factory is located just past the main shopping area of Woodside, about 40mins east of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills. It is a great place to take the family on a day trip or main destination around which to plan a few hours in the Hills one day. When we were kids I spent a LOT of time helping myself to the samples at Melba's as my sister used to ride horses at one of the nearby properties and I had a lot of spare time to kill in the area. I was always fascinated to watch the process of making the chocolate, toffee traffic lights and other delicious goodies (the samples were an added bonus!). The current site is known as 'Heritage Park' and houses Melbas Chocolate Factory and a range of other cottage industries such as the next door Cheese Factory, so there really is something for everyone here. The factory has been transformed into a large emporium styled confectionery factory shop with its heritage equipment making delisious old fashioned treats. This is a centerpiece for 5 different rooms, where various manufacturing processes can be viewed. These are the Chocolate Room, Depositing Room, Packing Room, Panning…
