Best Fish & Chips in Adelaide

Family Friendly Eats, The Best of Adelaide for Kids

FISH AND CHIPS. Who doesn’t love it? Whether it’s fish & chips at the beach on a hot night, something to warm you up in winter or a lazy school holiday dinner, you really can’t go past a great local fish & chip shop. Battered, crumbed or grilled, we are pretty spoilt for quality options in South Australia and there’s just something about unwrapping the paper to reveal a delicious piece of fresh fish, being gently hugged by crispy hot chips (with chicken salt obviously).

Fish & chip shops are so much more that just fish & chip shops nowadays! Across Adelaide, fish & chip joints have gotten quite fancy! You’ll find burgers, chicken, pizza, even the occasional yiros! They really are a one stop shop for the whole family no matter what you’re all in the mood for. Bonus – hot chips are one of those foods that nearly all kids will eat, so at least you’ll know they have had SOMETHING for dinner!

We have done the hard work of finding Adelaide’s best fish & chip shops. Have a look below & tell us if you think we’ve missed any great ones!

FIsh Out of Water, Hyde Park

Jimmies Takeaway, Aldinga Beach

Jimmies Takeaway is legendary in the southern suburbs of Adelaide – and for good reason! You’ll find Jimmies on the Esplanade at Aldinga Beach with a nice little shelter and small playground opposite, so it’s the perfect place to grab lunch or dinner and let the kids have a play while you enjoy the view.

The options at Jimmies Takeaway are HUGE! They do everything from fish & chips, pizza, bugers, desserts, salads, sides and HEAPS more. Over winter they even serve roast veggies, so you don’t have to feel quite so guilty about getting takeaway! To make life easier, you can order and pay via their app – it’s really simple and is really clear what is included with all of the value pack options. They even have a Kids Pack option which includes a treat!

The Stunned Mullet, Henley Beach

‘Sourcing local and sustainable fresh seafood has been and always will be the heart of our family business’ – says Amanda and Dino Papadopoulos. How good is that? Sold! This is not your ordinary suburban fish and chippery. Dino’s day usually starts early, filleting up to eight varieties of locally caught premium fish. Did you know that most places you’d order cooked garfish or flathead in Adelaide, it wouldn’t even be Australian, let alone South Australian?

The Stunned Mullet sure cook up a storm. Nothing is pre cooked here, you can see your fresh food on display and it’s then lightly battered (OMG the thin crispy batter here is to die for), crumbed or grilled. They also have an extensive burger and more traditional take away menu.

Flying Fish Kiosk Port Elliot

The Flying Fish is situated on the beautiful beachfront at Horseshoe Bay, Port Elliot. The kiosk and restaurant are named after an old two-masted schooner which was wrecked in the bay in 1860 – one of a number of ships to meet this fate while Horseshoe Bay operated as a seaport in that period. You can order simply online from the kiosk for takeaway, and continue to play, swim, relax, build sandcastles and you will be notified when your order is ready to collect from the window. Zero down time, max family time – how good is that? Plus the quality? Unsurpassed.

  • Hey Adelaide, eat here with kids! Skip the cafe's, pubs and stuffy restaurants and step back in time to relive those carefree childhood summer days at Largs Bay Kiosk. If you are any thing like us, you have often wished you could give your family some of the 80's and 90's childhood that we had right? Crispy fish and chips that taste like they’ve been made the same way for decades, juicy burgers, classic milkshakes and of course, the iconic treat: ice cream! Whether you're indulging in a boysenberry cone or any of your favourite flavours, there’s nothing quite like being near the beach on a warm evening with the salty breeze and the sound of waves in the background. The food is delicious at any time of day or night, with our favourites being fish and chips, burgers, cake, coffee, milkshakes and the scoops go with out saying. It's well priced nosh and the serving sizes are generous. The real charm of Largs Bay Kiosk, though, is its retro vibe. It’s the kind of place where families gather, kids laugh and…

  • Find it at: Heron Way, Hallett Cove This is a great playground with amazing views over the ocean. The reserve includes a 5-way swing, tunnel slide, water and sand play, nature play, fitness equipment, shade sales, toilet, seating, shelter and BBQ facilities. The playground is unfenced, and there is a drop down to the rocky beach that parents with fast moving smaller children will need to be mindful of. There is parking close to the playground, and plenty of other awesome features in this area. For example, the Marino-Hallet Cove Coastal Trail, which goes all the way to Marino, before joining the path to Kingston Park, Brighton and further along The Esplanade. There is also the Hallett Cove Conservation Park right next door to explore and enjoy. The tunnel slide that has a slight curve to it. My kids wanted to climb up it before attempting to go down as it's a little steep. But once they went down the first time, they loved it! Be aware that if you are having a private conversation at the top of the tunnel slide then the people at the bottom will be able to hear it VERY clearly. My kids loved using…
