Best Fish & Chips in Adelaide

Family Friendly Eats, The Best of Adelaide for Kids

FISH AND CHIPS. Who doesn’t love it? Whether it’s fish & chips at the beach on a hot night, or something to warm you up in winter, you really can’t go past the local fish & chip shop. Battered, crumbed, grilled or deep fried, there is just something about unwrapping the paper to reveal a delicious piece of fresh fish, being gently hugged by crispy hot chips.

But fish & chip shops are so much more that just fish & chip shops nowadays! Across Adelaide, fish & chip joints have gotten quite fancy! You’ll find burgers, chicken, pizza, even the occasional yiros! They really are a one stop shop for the whole family no matter what you’re all in the mood for. And bonus – hot chips are one of those foods that nearly all kids will eat, so at least you’ll know they have had SOMETHING for dinner!

We have done the hard work of finding Adelaide’s best fish & chip shops or places to grab a takeaway meal. Have a look below & tell us if you think we’ve missed any great ones!

Jimmies Takeaway, Aldinga Beach

Jimmies Takeaway is legendary in the southern suburbs of Adelaide – and for good reason! You’ll find Jimmies on the Esplanade at Aldinga Beach with a nice little shelter and small playground opposite, so it’s the perfect place to grab lunch or dinner and let the kids have a play while you enjoy the view.

The options at Jimmies Takeaway are HUGE! They do everything from fish & chips, pizza, bugers, desserts, salads, sides and HEAPS more. Over winter they even serve roast veggies, so you don’t have to feel quite so guilty about getting takeaway! To make life easier, you can order and pay via their app – it’s really simple and is really clear what is included with all of the value pack options. They even have a Kids Pack option which includes a treat!

The food itself is great – the chips were the perfect level of crispiness, the fish was super fresh and tasty and the kids polished off their nuggets in record time!

Follow them on Facebook & grab Jimmies next time you’re down south!

The Stunned Mullet, Henley Beach

‘Sourcing local and sustainable fresh seafood has been and always will be the heart of our family business’ – says Amanda and Dino Papadopoulos. How good is that? Sold! This is not your ordinary suburban fish and chippery. Dino’s day usually starts early, filleting up to eight varieties of locally caught premium fish. Did you know that most places you’d order cooked garfish or flathead in Adelaide, it wouldn’t even be Australian, let alone South Australian?

The Stunned Mullet sure cook up a storm. Nothing is pre cooked here, you can see your fresh food on display and it’s then lightly battered (OMG the thin crispy batter here is to die for), crumbed or grilled. They also have an extensive burger and more traditional take away menu.

Cafe Capella’s, Moonta

If you ever spent time in Moonta, you might already have fallen in love with Cafe Capella’s. They have a HUGE menu that includes dine in or takeaway and of course has FISH AND CHIPS!
Crispy, fresh and delicious, this was an absolute winner with the kids (who are usually nugget kids but devoured their fish in no time!).
Their staff are genuinely lovely and bend over backwards to make you feel welcome. Whether you dine in or takeaway, these fish and chips are perfection, along with everything else on their menu.

Hallas Fish & Grill, Findon

If you find your self with a hankering for fresh crispy fish and chips while in the west, you’ll find Hallas on Grange Rd at Findon, just a stones throw from the beach. You won’t find a crispier batter! The oil is fresh and the shop is immaculately clean.

The family value packs were great value and you’ll find the range here is excellent – definitely something to satisfy the whole family, from burgers, salads, steak sandwhiches, fritters and of course FISH! They have multiple types of fish to choose from, all super fresh.

Stop into Hallas on your way to the beach and enjoy fish and chips while watching the sunset!

Check out their website to order.

Champion Takeaway, Christies Beach

Perfectly positioned on Beach Road at Christies Beach, you can call past and grab fish and chips on your way to the beach!

The kids meals are just $7.90. Children have the option of nuggets, fish, chicken or a cheese burger with chips and pop top (bottle of water also an option if preferred). They have their own website www.championtakeaway.com and are available on UberEats.

Champion Takeaway is very well know for their freshly filleted flake which comes from their own boats. You can’t get much more local than that! (No bones whatsoever in flake – perfect for children!)

They are open 7 days a week which is handy – how annoying is it when you want takeaway on a Monday or Tuesday and nowhere is open?

Head to their website to see the menu and order!

Flying Fish Kiosk Port Elliot

The Flying Fish is situated on the beautiful beachfront at Horseshoe Bay, Port Elliot. The kiosk and restaurant are named after an old two-masted schooner which was wrecked in the bay in 1860 – one of a number of ships to meet this fate while Horseshoe Bay operated as a seaport in that period. You can order simply online from the kiosk for takeaway, and continue to play, swim, relax, build sandcastles and you will be notified when your order is ready to collect from the window. Zero down time, max family time – how good is that? Plus the quality? Unsurpassed.

  • If your kids are anything like ours, one of their favourite things to do is slip, slop, slap and wrap and head down to the beach for the day. It’s even better when you find a beach that has some awesome rock pools to explore. The team at Kids in Adelaide have searched high and low (and under a few rocks) to find some of the best rock pools in South Austraila for you to explore this summer. Of course it goes without saying, always make sure your kids are super careful around rockpools (the best way to do this is carefully walking around the rockpools rather than running or jumping) as the rocks can be slippery and sharp. A pair of old sneakers or water shoes come in handy! Also remember rockpools are home to a bunch of different critters so let’s keep their homes safe by making sure all rocks that are turned over are put back, leave all rocks and shells where you found them. Take only your rubbish and a whole bunch of photos home with you. Here’s some of our favourites…. happy exploring!
