Step back in time on a trip down memory lane with this relaxed, unique family experience.

After a leisurely drive to Montacute in the Adelaide Hills, our carriage awaited us by a charming old stone building on Institute Road, creating a picturesque scene that set the tone for the entire journey. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Libby, her canine sidekick, Eddie, and the most beautifully natured horse, Stella – a delightful trio indeed! Our youngest passenger, at age of four, was initially a little nervous. However, Libby’s friendly manner and casual conversation instantly put her at ease. As we made ourselves comfortable, we meandered along a quiet road, taking in the stunning views of rolling hills, fruit trees, working farms, and orchards, all while enjoying the sweet rhythm of Stella’s clip-clopping hooves. Keep an eye out for wildlife, from kangaroos to koalas snoozing above in gum trees. The kids, in particular, loved their special turn “driving” up front, eagerly asking Libby questions about Stella and the passing scenery.

The 45-minute ride was the perfect amount of time, although, if we had traded the kids for a bottle of champagne, we might’ve just extended the adventure all day long! Now, that’s a tempting thought. 😉

To extend our already wonderful experience, Libby offered a picture-perfect picnic setup near the Hall after the ride. Think cushions, throw rugs, and low pallets dressed in tablecloths, setting a boho chic vibe that was nothing short of perfection. Armed with our own picnic goodies, we seized the moment for some Instagram-worthy shots before Libby graciously left us to enjoy what can only be described as a “peaceful” picnic. Well, as peaceful as a picnic can be with four energetic kids in tow! The open space provided the perfect playground for the little ones to burn off some steam, complete with hills to roll down and flower fields to explore. A post-carriage picnic? Now, that’s how you top off a magical day!

The Montacute Valley Ride costs $180 per 45 minute carriage ride and seats 6 adult passengers (or equivalent with children). To add a vintage picnic to your day, it’s an extra $100 for 2, $120 for 4 or $140 for up to 12 but we think it’s absolutely worthwhile. And that’s not all, Libby also offers Unicorn Tea Parties, which look as dreamy as they sound, a Vintage Tea experience plus carriage hire for special events such as weddings and more. With gift vouchers also available to purchase, we think this would make the ultimate gift (hint hint)!

Classic Carriage Drives has crafted a truly special experience that we wholeheartedly recommend to families seeking a unique and memorable adventure and everlasting memories!

  • Every little girl dreams of a magical birthday surrounded by unicorns (ok, maybe not every little girl, but mine certainly did), fairy tales, and a world of wonder. At Classic Carriage Rides in the stunning Adelaide Hills, that dream became a reality. Libby has created the most whimsical experience on her Montacute property, where rustic charm, boho beauty, and a sprinkle of unicorn magic come together to make a celebration that feels straight out of a fairy tale. The setup is seriously something else - every detail, from the embroidered floral tablecloths to the dainty glassware and handpicked flowers (grown by Libby herself), feels like it belongs in the pages of a storybook. There’s a gorgeous little teepee tucked under the trees, where the kids can escape to play, share secrets, or just soak up the magic of it all. It’s rustic, it’s a bit boho, and it’s full of those extra touches that make you stop and say, “wow.” Indiana, the beautiful white horse who transforms into a real-life unicorn, is the true heart of the experience. With her calm, placid nature, she’s exactly what you’d want for little ones. The kids were completely captivated, brushing her, feeding her…
