Mick O’Shea’s Hotel, Hackham

Family Friendly Eats, Kids Eat Free, South

Mick O’Shea’s has had a serious glow-up, and it’s officially stepped into its “ultimate family hangout” era. The refreshed beer garden, brand-new outdoor bar and expanded pavilion have given the place a breezy, holiday-afternoon vibe while still keeping all the cosy charm of a classic Irish pub. Inside, you’ll still find the warm hospitality and hearty pub meals you know and love, but outside is where the magic happens. Think loads of space for long lunches, family celebrations or a relaxed arvo while the kids run (and climb, and slide) to their heart’s content.

What really makes Mick’s shine for families is how intentionally the whole outdoor area has been set up with kids (and sanity-seeking parents) in mind. The fully fenced playground sits right next to the outdoor seating, meaning you can sip, snack or sneak a moment of peace while the kids play safely in full view. Add in a big grassy area with picnic benches and umbrellas, plus comfy couches, tables and bar stools under cover, and suddenly you’ve got a spot that works whether you’re wrangling toddlers, entertaining big kids or juggling both.

Then there’s the fun stuff and Mick’s delivers it in spades. Free mini-golf (four holes of pure kid joy), Sunday kids’ entertainment that ranges from face-painting and balloon twisting to petting zoos and magic shows, and one of the best kids’ menus going around. Everything is $15 or less and comes with a drink, and the “Junior Ploughman” – cheesy garlic bread, grilled chicken, shaved ham and fruit — was such a hit with our crew we saw multiple kids at nearby tables demolishing theirs too. Worth noting, kids eat free on Monday and Tuesday evenings, one child per paying accompanying adult.

Great food, loads of space, relaxed vibes and plenty to keep the kids happy equals a no-brainer family outing. Lunch or dinner, sunshine or showers, Mick O’Shea’s just works. If you haven’t visited this southern institution since the renovation, bump it to the top of your list — it’s absolutely worth the trip.

  • A South Australian icon for more than 55 years, the Pancake Kitchen always makes me nostalgic for my childhood. It was so exciting to head to that nook of Gilbert St & be allowed to eat pancakes for dinner! I can still smell the maple syrup & remember looking at the menu wondering who on earth would eat bacon on pancakes (adult me, that's who). Does anyone else remember the jukebox out in the back room? The original Spotify! It may have changed a bit since then, but The Original Pancake Kitchen is still a hit with kids & makes the perfect family dining spot. It is also now in THREE different locations across Adelaide. The original Gilbert St restaurant has had little pancake babies (pikelets?) & is now also found in Modbury & now inside the Marion Cultural Centre. Of course, it goes without saying that the pancakes are amazing. There are so many different options to choose from including sweet & savory options in small, regular or tall stacks. If pancakes aren't your thing, you can grab something from the all-day breakfast menu or is you need some meat on your plate, Pancake Kitchens also double as a…

  • Here at Kids In Adelaide, we love a cafe that just gets it right - good service, good, food, good beverages and somewhere for the kids to play. Thankfully, Cantina61 at Seaford Rise ticks all the boxes! Under new ownership since April 2022, the team have been working hard to deliver a place you can go with family or friends and just enjoy yourselves and their great food! One of the first thing the new owners did was create a kids play area inside - surrounded by lounges and large tables for groups of parents to gather, the kids will stay occupied with drawing and toys while you indulge in some much needed adult conversation! If the weather is nice, you can opt to sit outside - the cafe is set far back enough from the road that you won't need to stress. If you are sitting outside, feel free to bring your dog along too - yep Cantina61 is pet-friendly and also offer pet biscuits and FREE puppacinos! Onto the menu and WOW, what a menu it is! You'll find breakfast favourites, through to nachos, schnitzels, burgers, veggie stacks and HEAPS MORE. The kids are well looked after with…

  • Zeea's Eatery, exclusive to the Tony & Marks retail experience, is basically the superhero of Adelaide dining spots for families. Picture this: you walk in with your squad of mini-humans, and instead of getting the side-eye from fellow diners, you're greeted with sympathetic nods, quick, quality caffeine offerings and knowing smiles. Talk about seeking refuge in the comforting embrace of good fresh food and understanding company, with a side serve of epic kids offerings from breakfast to treats/snacks and of course lunch menu options. Let's talk about the menu – it's like they've cracked the code to kid-friendly cuisine. They've got all the classics, from bacon and eggs to pancakes and toasties, guaranteed to make even the fussiest little critics nod in approval. We love the sensible sized milkshakes, babyccinos for little hands and kids pancakes. The kids portion sizes are perfect and keep the price really reasonable. Team their locations (aside from Cavan) with the convenience of shopping fresh and fine produce and this place comes up a winner time and time again. You know the drill..... it's Saturday morning, you've done the sports game, kids are starving and you need to tackle the grocery shop next? Zeea's hits…
