Head up to Gumeracha to see the Big Rocking Horse – the World’s Biggest! – where you can even climb up and receive a certificate of achievement upon completion! The Big Rocking Horse makes a great visit in the Adelaide Hills area – climb to the top of the Rocking Horse, check out the awesome toy factory, grab a bite to eat, play some mini-golf and see all the animals.

There is an onsite 7 acre wildlife park, with heaps of native animals from red and grey kangaroo’s, wallabies and emus. The kids also love the other farm animals – goats, ducks, geese, alpacas and sheep who all love the animal food sold at the shop.  Entry is only $5 per person and $2 for animal feed!

There is also the coolest toy shop there too. Think awesome wooden toys and super cool wooden puzzles suitable for toddlers to adults so there is something for everyone!

We recommend doing the horse first, get the exercise out the way and then take your time to stroll around the animal park. Make sure to leave enough time to check out the toy factory or play some mini golf (9 holes for $10 pp) and the Cafe is a really nice little spot and well worth a coffee and a snack.

The Big Rocking Horse is open 9 am to 5 pm 7 days a week, including Public Holidays
The Animal Park closes at 4:30pm and the cafe operates from 9am – 5pm
(closed on Christmas Day and days of Catastrophic Fire Danger)

You’ll find it at 452 Torrens Valley Rd, Gumeracha SA 5233

It is a great place to take the family on a day trip or main destination around which to plan a few hours in the Hills one day. When we were kids I spent a LOT of time helping myself to the samples at Melba's as my sister used to ride horses at one of the nearby properties and I had a lot of spare time to kill in the area. I was always fascinated to watch the process of making the chocolate, toffee traffic lights and other delicious goodies (the samples were an added bonus!). The current site is known as 'Heritage Park' and houses Melba's Chocolate Factory and a range of other cottage industries such as the next door Cheese Factory, so there really is something for everyone here.
