The BIG Rocking Horse and Toy Factory Gumeracha

Adelaide Hills for Kids, Discover, Regional Features

Head up to Gumeracha to see the Bog Rocking Horse – the World’s Biggest! – where you can even climb up and receive a certificate of achievement upon completion! The Big Rocking Horse makes a great visit in the Adelaide Hills area – climb to the top of the Rocking Horse, check out the awesome toy factory, grab a bite to eat and see all the animals.

There is an onsite 7 acre wildlife park, with heaps of native animals from red and grey kangaroo’s, wallabies and emus. The kids also love the other farm animals – goats, ducks, geese, alpacas and sheep who all love the animal food sold at the shop.  Entry is only $2 per person!

There is also the coolest toy shop there too. Think awesome wooden toys and super cool wooden puzzles suitable for toddlers to adults so there is something for everyone!

We recommend doing the horse first, get the exercise out the way and then take your time to stroll around the animal park. Make sure to leave enough time to check out the toy factory and the Cafe is a really nice little spot and well worth a coffee and a snack.

The Big Rocking Horse is open 9 am to 5 pm 7 days a week, including Public Holidays
The Animal Park closes at 4:30pm and the cafe operates from 10am – 3pm
(closed on Christmas Day and days of Catastrophic Fire Danger)

You’ll find it at 452 Torrens Valley Rd, Gumeracha SA 5233

  • How hot is this! Visit the Jam Factory viewing platform and you can watch daily glass blowing demonstrations from the glass studio. From the viewing platform (safely above the workshop floor) you can see the vats that house the molten glass, the furnaces the artists use to regularly bring the glass back up to temperature, the workspace where they mould and fashion their art and the kilns to fire them once finished. The skill and courage of the glassworkers is incredible to watch. • Melbas Chocolate Factory is located just past the main shopping area of Woodside, about 40mins east of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills. It is a great place to take the family on a day trip or main destination around which to plan a few hours in the Hills one day. When we were kids I spent a LOT of time helping myself to the samples at Melba's as my sister used to ride horses at one of the nearby properties and I had a lot of spare time to kill in the area. I was always fascinated to watch the process of making the chocolate, toffee traffic lights and other delicious goodies (the samples were an added bonus!). The current site is known as 'Heritage Park' and houses Melbas Chocolate Factory and a range of other cottage industries such as the next door Cheese Factory, so there really is something for everyone here. The factory has been transformed into a large emporium styled confectionery factory shop with its heritage equipment making delisious old fashioned treats. This is a centerpiece for 5 different rooms, where various manufacturing processes can be viewed. These are the Chocolate Room, Depositing Room, Packing Room, Panning…

  • I. LOVE. MARKETS! I've been on both sides of the market stall, and I am a big fan. Give me a fresh juice, some live music, and some cheese samples and I will come a running. Here in Adelaide we are so lucky to have so many fantastic markets to choose from so we've gathered up the ones we know about and added them all to this page. It's updated constantly with new markets added all the time so make sure you check back each weekend to find out where your local market is, or discover a new Adelaide market to check out this weekend!
