If you’re travelling through the Barossa Valley with kids, make sure you add Kapunda Bakehouse to your road trip pit-stop list. Right in the heart of Kapunda’s main street, it’s a brilliant spot to grab a bite to eat, stretch your legs and enjoy an exceptional country bakery experience. There’s a lovely big lawn area out the back, complete with lawn games, giving the kids somewhere to burn off a little energy while you enjoy a well-earned coffee.

We stopped in and particularly loved the pies and donuts (honestly, choosing just one sweet treat is a challenge), and the coffee was great too. There’s plenty to tempt you at the counter, from classic bakery favourites and savoury pastries to sweet treats, cakes and freshly made options. It’s an easy, relaxed stop for breakfast, lunch or a little afternoon pick-me-up, and a popular local favourite with visitors also praising the generous selection and friendly service.

While you’re in town, it’s worth making a little extra time to visit the local Kapunda playground too. The Lions Club Playground on Hill Street is a great one for families, with plenty of play equipment, slides, shady spots and even the iconic Leo the Train for little adventurers to explore. So next time you’re heading through the Barossa with the family, put Kapunda on your itinerary! Good coffee, excellent bakery treats and a chance for the kids to stretch their legs. That’s a road trip stop we can get around.

  • Find it at: 23-27 Hill St, Kapunda What a gem of a regional playground this one is! Fully fenced and spacious, with plenty of natural and artificial shade, plus one of the best trains (full sized we might add) we have seen in quite some time. Leo is an old steam engine from the copper mining days of the town, and your train loving kids will be all over this one. There is also seating and a pergola, which is very popular for parties. There are two playgrounds, one for the little kids, and one for the bigger kids. There is a bathroom with disabled access and baby change room facilities are also in this huge enclosure, which is very well maintained and is obviously a favourite for locals and day trippers alike. If you are travelling North, do your family a favour and stretch your legs here, and we highly recommend Litl Mo's Bakery just around the corner.

  • We have been in love with Kies Family Wines up in the Barossa Valley for as long as we can remember. It was always such a beautiful stop off on a Barossa wine tour or day trip, that we could not wait to take the kids up to soak in the serenity and tuck into a fabulous meal. Located out at Lyndoch, under an hour from the CBD, this stunning estate offers a family friendly vibe that we find really hard to come across, in what are usually adult centric venues. Our intrepid foodies, a couple of ten year olds (with an opinion on every thing), loved the lawn games (in what was a predominantly fenced area which we loved for younger kids) and the staff catered for us wonderfully with a sheltered outdoor table. Its also worth noting, this winery is directly adjacent the new Barossa Park complex, and Kies are putting on some excellent family friendly events across the Gather Round weekend. Tickets are just $10, there is car parking on site for hundreds of visitors and even if you don't have tickets to a game, you can come here, soak up the buzz and watch it all…

  • Allow us to put a spotlight on one of the most welcoming and flavoursome brunch cafe's that we have ever experienced in Adelaide. You are going to love this one and so are the kids! Lets unpack it - there's a lot. Half Cup Café is more than just a café, it's soul food. A social and environmental enterprise committed to making a positive impact. The team here are dedicated to serving up fresh, delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options while supporting social causes both locally and abroad. They also occasionally run some pretty cool workshops (barista training any one?) and have the most beautiful, sustainable homewares and giftware's in the adjoining business, Living Jute. Located on leafy Sir Donald Bradman Drive at Cowandilla, actually lets just hold up right there and throw in early: No Adelaide Airport drop off or pick up will ever be more impressive than one where you stop for a 'hole in the wall coffee' on your way in or out of Adelaide. Or you know, 'wow' the pants off your next visitors with the full quality experience and stop for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Ok..... let's continue. Screenshot The coffee is exceptional and you'd…
