Famous in the Eastern suburbs, the Alma Tavern has been a staple for years, but did you know this beautifully renovated modern space offers plenty for families including KIDS EAT FREE on Monday! We called in for a family pub meal and checked out their extensive bright and on trend renovation and our bellies (and my wallet) were impressed.
Offering a number of well decorated seating areas surrounding the bar, plus a separate restaurant and enormous beer garden with fireplace and retractable roof, whatever space takes your fancy you really can’t go wrong. For us with under 5s, we chose the beer garden which allows the option of a number of booths (great to try and lock in those runaway toddlers) or seating around the 360 degree fire place (not the temperature we must clarify!). Watch the wood oven pizzas get made in the oven and check out the footy on the massive outdoor TV, on a nice day with the natural light beaming in, this really is a sensational spot for a feed.
The kids menu offers enough options to satisfy all the fussy toddlers out there, and you will find all the usual favourites here (hello nuggets and chips!). Well priced with a $16 kids meal deal serving up a meal, drink and dessert option for the under 12s. They offer the fantastic ‘Kid Eat Free’ deal with any adult meal purchase every Monday, which is music to our ears with the cost of living at the moment. They will be also launching a bottomless brunch option which will include bottomless milkshake and juice options for the kids! Brunch dining has also been added to the menu, with kids waffles to be a sure fire hit we expect.
You won’t find any playgrounds or arcade areas here, but what you will find is a high quality pub that welcomes families with open arms and allows a comfortable space for kids and parent alike to enjoy a high quality meal, and maybe even catch a game of footy on the big screen too. And if you’re looking for a pre or post meal play you’ll find some of our favourite Eastern suburbs playgrounds here

Find it at: The Parade & West Terrace, Kensington Gardens Hidden away in the inner Eastern suburbs is this the awesome Burnside Adventure Playground. Despite being a multi-award winning park and just off The Parade, I've been surprised to find how many locals don't even know about this place with things to do for families of all ages and interests! It s a firm fave for us and our two boys under 5, plus our friends with toddlers and others with 6 & 8 year old! There is an entrance to a small carpark from The Parade just past the tennis courts (see map below), but on a nice weekend it can get busy. Plenty of additional on street parking can be found within 40m walk to the main playground on West Terrace. The main playground on the western side of the resserve has plenty for kids from 18months to 7 years or so, including 2 great flying fox (one seated one for all abilities and ages). It also has a few swings, slide, climbing frame and a great rubber softfall area and bike/scooter path. Take a short walk past the facilities block and car park, note the beautiful old…
Find it at: Greenhill Road, Hazelwood Park Hazelwood Park Playground is a beauty for families of all ages and abilities. Upgraded in 2010 (and given a bit more TLC in early 2024), this shady park with plenty to do was one of the first (and still one of our fave) parks with a nature play feel. Set in the corner of the huge reserve there is plenty of space, plenty of shade and plenty of play equipment. In the summer the Burnside Outdoor Pool is also open to the public with large, clean pools and a great kids area too.. Our family love the big softfall hill with inbuilt steps and slides, the super high climbing net, the old tractor to climb on, the dual flying fox and the sandput with dinosaur bones in it to bring out their inner paleantologist. Just a note the the playground isn't fully fenced and while it's relatively easy to keep an eye on the kids, parents should take extra care. What we LOVE about Hazelwood Park Playground: Multiple Slides down from the large purpose built hill with softfall surface and inbuilt steps, Spinners Four swings Liberty swing and Accessible roundabout Slide and climbing…
Find it at: Stirling St, Tusmore Tusmore Park Wading Pool is fast becoming a favourite spot for visitors to cool down. The design features a fully fenced and shaded wading pool, lawned areas for picnics, a new creek style section, tiered seating and water play equipment for plenty of splashing and playing during the summer months. A few points worth mentioning: It's fully fenced!! Hoorah! It's unsupervised which means there's NO lifeguard on duty - so pretty please keep an eye on your kids while they're in the water. It's open sunrise to sunset. No bookings required. and best of all, it's FREE! Tusmore Park is a gorgeous spot in the Eastern suburbs with plenty of room for picnics, birthday parties and weekend BBQs. As well as the fabulous wading pool there's a nearby playground, tennis court, toilets and a gorgeous creek running right through the middle.
