Moses basket, crib, bassinette, cot…….
Trying to decide on where your newborn baby will sleep when you first bring them home is one of the big purchase decisions you’ll make.
I’d seen the Amby Baby Hammock pop up in my news feed while I was pregnant so I emailed them to ask a few questions and was lucky enough to be sent one to try out.
Amby was created in 1989 by Aussie Ambrose Hooi, as a cure for his daughter’s colic. It’s actually very common around the world to use hammocks for babies, so after a lot of research and testing, Hooi came up with a hammock perfect for the Australian market. This was over 20 years ago, and since then the Amby has been further tested and improved into the version it is today. New innovations include increased air flow and visibility by lowering the side mesh down to the mattress.
The Amby Baby Hammock Air is the only baby hammock on the market that can be used up to 12 months of age. It is larger, safer and has an adjustable incline unlike any other.
One of the first questions I had, and a question that I get asked all the time is “is it safe?”
Amby Baby Hammocks have been on the Australian market since 1989 and not a single case of SIDS has been reported in one of their hammocks. This record far exceeds cots and bassinets. Amby hammocks tested to the relevant parts of the strict British and European safety standards for cradles and cribs/cots and the mattress passes the Australian and New Zealand safety standard for mattress firmness too.
The Amby Snuggler and/or the new Safe T Sleep Wrap stop baby from rolling and keep them cosy and safe on their little backs.
The lovely Trish (owner of Amby) is more than happy to answer questions, and there is even an Amby Facebook group Amby Mamas which is a great place for more information, answers and to see the Amby in use.
Why I am loving my Amby….
Sleep happens in it!
Ziggy is now 3 months old and has slept every night and most day sleeps since we brought her home in her hammock. The majority of the time I put her in just before she falls asleep and it just takes a few gentle rocks, sways or bounces and she’s off. Particularly good for those cat napping babies who need a bit of help resettling after the dreaded 45 minutes.
I love how portable it is. I am sitting in Noosa as I type this, as she sleeps downstairs in her hammock that we brought with us.
My first baby N-E-V-E-R properly slept in a porta cot so holidays were always a bit of a nightmare at bedtime. But the Amby packs away perfectly into a travel bag that you can throw in the car or even take on a plane. So bedtime is consistent and your MUCH more likely to enjoy your time away!
Can help with reflux and colic – The Amby allows baby to sleep in a slightly upright angle which can really help babies that suffer with reflux (like mine) Bubs can be inclined as much as 30 degrees, easing reflux symptoms and helping them fall asleep comfortably. The gentle, rhythmic bouncing and swinging of the Amby is similar to being held in Mums arms, which is where colicky babies love to be. Read more about this here
Keep baby close, but in their own space – If you’re not keen on co-sleeping, but want to keep baby close to you at night time the Amby Baby Hammock is ideal. It slides very easily next to my side of the bed and sits at the perfect height for me to reach over and gentle swing or bounce baby if she becomes unsettled at night. I can resettle her still lying down in my own bed! I mean if THAT ALONE isn’t a reason to get one I don’t know what is.
